GWC Podcast #208

PM Juan?

Agreed. Just put them out of reach of the baby. d:

Well it wasn’t a planned thing really. I came home and WHAMO… I was the victim of a nesting, soon-to-be mom. I didn’t have much to say about it.

I’m been snickering about “junk mech” vs. “junk-mech” all day.

Know how that is.

Our pleasure with the onesie. Glad to hear that Squeeker has already marked it as hers. We couldn’t resist and got one for Lily too. I’ll post pics sometime soon…

Great 'cast, as ever.

Chuck. Above and beyond, dude, above and beyond. That sounded painful, and I hope you’re recovering well.

Sean, I think you have the coolest dad ever to grace a podcast.

Regarding her description of the whip, maybe Audra’s just been hanging out with Argentinian ducks:

More can be read here.

Yeah, the whole copyright/IP thing has gone off the fraking hook in the past fifty years. Techdirt has touched on this, and I’m sure many others as well. But architecture is considered copyrightable, not to mention the encroachment of trademarks into “IP” law (ask a documentary filmmaker about this Bravo Sierra and you’ll get an earful.) The Church has a case, incredible as it may seem.

Here’s why Indy V could be good: The Indy series is like Star Trek, but all the odd-numbered ones are keepers.

i am deeply disappointed that my voicemail regarding Harry Potter’s stiff elderwand post the petrificus totalis spell, and Labia Lovegood was not shared with the community; nor Tom Riddle’s Serpent up moaning Myrtle’s bathroom pipes. And the Galactica thought police screened it out. You people missed some brilliant stuff. BRILLIANT I TELL YOU. I am fearful that Indiana does not offer quite as much creative grist. But i shall try.

Bro it’s not all about you

What about junkmech?

Chuck, I hope you feel better.

(For fear of seeming like a troll.) Not sure how much I agree about the third movie being better than the second. I’d say the second tried to keep the spirit of the idea by pursuing a different type of pulp story. Honestly, I’d have to say the third movie (while good in its own right) just didn’t maintain the seriousness of its own creation. (It became a little too Keystone Kops and not enough Indiana Jones.) But that’s just my opinion.

The bit about the whips was brilliantly done, but who was the second guy talking along with David. (Sorry, if this is really obvious.)

THAT’S RIGHT!!! When are you all going to learn that it is all about DP? IYKWIM :stuck_out_tongue:

Just wanted to mention that the finances of the Catholic Church of Brazil are probably more tied to the state of Brazil’s economy than how well off the Vatican is doing.

Seriously? Copyrighting landmarks? That would be good news for New York City if the US shared the same copyright law. How many movies has the statue of liberty been prominently featured? Maybe Heston was referring to copyright law: “You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!”

Feel better DT!

That’s true just ask Rachel

I have to agree it’s a bit strange. The other side to the argument is the owner of a copyright should have some control over how their work is portrayed. For example, if someone portrayed a particular landmark as a home of corruption, but really it’s a wholesome family attraction (a la Disney World.) I could see where someone could make an argument about harm.

That said, I don’t think it really helps copyright to push this. There really isn’t any harm caused (at least that I can see, and I’m not a legal expert) and it ends up making legitimate copyright arguments seem silly.

Bazinga!

Due to the unfortunate condition of Chuck’s voice a good title for this podcast might have been, “Sean introduces ‘The Princess and the Frog’!”

I kept expecting Devo’s ‘Whip it’ to sneak into the background during the cast, loved learning about whips… Thank You. Educational as well as entertaining, a nice mix.

As for who is the better lover in the Indiana Jones series my vote goes to Sallah, come on seriously… the man has a dozen children!!! He must be something right! The Jones boys only produced one each, it is no contest; Sallah wins by a landslide…

Get well Chuck!

I would have to agree with this. I really felt like the third movie was a bad retread of the first movie and enjoyed the Temple of Doom much more.

On a different note - I would like to disagree with the idea that Malcolm Reynolds bullies people. He is loud, obnoxious, and sometimes mean, but those are different character traits than bullying. I would especially point out that the ship is Mal’s and as such he gets to make the rules. I know that Sean asked that we look at situations as if the ship was not Mal’s, but the whole point of his behavior is that the ship is his and that the crew answers to the Captain (traditionally at sea, the captain is the law). Furthermore, looking at how things work aboard a ship, the military (and Mal has a military background) is a better example of how things work than any other comparison. If Mal is a bully then every leader I had while in the service (even the best ones) were also bullies.

Another way to look at is that bullying is about the strong preying on those who are perceived as weak. That is not what Mal does. On his ship, he treats everyone the same. In addition his standard answer when he is trying to get his way is that if the person does not like it - get off the ship. A bully is more likely to threaten bodily harm and Mal does not really do that to get his way. He threatens bodily harm to protect himself and the crew, which is really a different situation.

I agree to some extent. Last Crusade did have some moments when you had to scratch your head a little (I never got the sense that Marcus was such a bumbling ‘fool’, for lack of a better term, in Raiders) but I really loved it!

And I also believe Temple was underrated and unappreciated as well. Audra or Chuck - my apologies if this is incorrect - had mentioned in the cast that Indy’s character seemed less polished or rougher-around-the-edges compared to Raiders and Crusade. I wonder if this was by design as - and I may also be incorrect in this - Temple was supposed to have taken place chronologically before the first and third movie. I could be completely off base but I’m sure someone will correct me on that.

Besides, who can forgot the oh-so daring escape from Club Obi-Wan!!

“So long, Lao Che!”
