This week we continue the Cosmos arc, taking some time out to dive into a cool way to contribute to the search for alien intelligence: SETI @ Home. Highlights: we wonder where our flying car (and Space Shuttle replacement) is, wonder if concentration of political power might have affected past commitment to exploration, discuss the fine line between hope and faith, lament missed opportunities to meet Dr. Sagan, and worry about Vincenzo’s lost life. We’re joined by guest Dr. Eric Korpela.
I really like the new intro.
ETA: Just listened to the inteview with Dr. Korpela and the SETI @ Home program. I’m sold. I just downloaded it to my PC. I wonder if we’ll ever get to the point where we can run the program on a portable device like an iPhone?
I’ve seen SETI @ Home before, but currently I’m using World Community Grid, which is something similar that is used for stuff like medical research and stuff like that.
There’s also XGrid, which is pre-installed on all modern macs.
Great job on the new intro!!
CHUCK…CHUCK…CHUCK…CHUCK…So say we all!
Poundy drums were back for the outro! YAY! I’ve missed them!
Great 'cast guys…as usual.
Sorry I’ve been away for a bit…work and all that. Just wanted to say LOVEIN the Cosmos casts. Haven’t seen this stuff since I was a wee lad - thanks for bringing it back for me. Thanks much Sean for getting this one going!
Chuck - awesome job on the new into man - nicely done!
I mourn the death of the live intros and the hilarity that sometimes ensued.
Kudos on this arc, and in particular this cast! The new intro’s great, and the production values on the whole thing seemed ramped-up even beyond their usual stellar levels.
The opening scene in the movie Contact never ever ceases to stop me in my tracks. You want an idea of where our place is in this universe? Spend a little less than three minutes watching this:
Oh, and Audible.com members: Contact is available, narrated by Jodie Foster! It’s abridged, so you might want to grab the book too at some point.
AWESOME!!! Love that view of the Local Group on the way out.
Absolutely loving the new extended intro. I danced around the kitchen whilst unpacking the groceries.
Also loving the Cosmos arc. I’ve never nees the show, but it’s sounding really interesting. And I’ve just found that it’s available on DVD here in the UK (for just under £20), and it’s now on my Amazon pending-sufficient-funds list.
Topgun - Thanks for posting this link. This never fails to catch my breath.
Great job on the new intro! I did love the live goofy intros, but you sound so professional!
Loved IQ and Young Einstein, too!
Just landed in Fort Walton Beach and got to the hotel. I listening to teh Pocast on the planeride down. That was frakkin’ AWESOME.
LOVED the new intro and exit. (PS - Chuck, let Sean go first otherwise he almost never has anything to say).
LOVED that interview. The content was AWESOME. The first “produced” segment/interview was AWESOME.
This podcast just gets better and better and better.
Kudos to all that helped!
I am now running SETI@Home… Thanks for the inspiration.
Listening to the new podcast episode right now, and, once again, it’s so good. I have been enjoying watching Cosmos on Netflix so much. I’m going to be really sad when I’m finished with the series. BTW, have you guys seen this news story: 32 Planets Discovered Outside Solar System? Came across it just now while listening to the podcast, and it seemed pretty fortuitous!
Yeah! I remember that we had Seti@home on our computers in the late 90’s I didn’t know that they are still doing it. It will be great to hear an update on the Podcast. The screen saver back then was quite distracting with it’s little progress bars of computation. Need to finish listening to the first Cosmos Podcast, it’s been a busy week, though I have really enjoyed the first 2/3’s of it.
Holy Frak. We are ten away from 200!
From Audra in this podcast (giggle):
…I feel like there was a big hole, that I never knew was there and finally it’s being filled and it’s such a wonderful thing—and I just want to share it with everybody…
Hahahaha!
