GWC Podcast #189: Call Show

We set aside some time to take some of the many calls we received over the last few weeks. Highlights: we talk about Stargate’s “hard-core sci-fi” credentials, discuss the difference between “not liking” a show and calling it “crap,” express our opinions about Gua’uld history as related to Earth’s, speculate about what draws scientists to sci-fi, hear Sean’s plans for fantasy sci-fi (like fantasy football, but for sci-fi nerds) and Chuck’s initial take on Big Bang Theory, and generally commune with GWCers.

Oh My!!! Two podcasts in one day. Finally I can get my Juan fix. Yummy!

Big bang Theory is awesomenessity! Not all Geeks are created equal and that is why there are so many different terms. They are more nerd than geek but again it’s just semantics. They are PhD’s (except Moist) in there 20’s and exacTly what one would expect, hilarious. Not hilarious because they are comedians, funny because we understand what they are saying and their behaviors. We all get a laugh when we hear about Chuck making a spreadsheet to formulate his next battle strategy. Not because it’s nerdy but because we understand the motivation. Just go in without any preconceptions and accept the characters for who they are. When you have no opinion or hopes for something it can’t disappoint. Maybe this is why Flash Forward isn’t hooking me. It’s feels kinda like DayBreak where the premise is interesting but it feels very slow and not much is happening. I what to know what will happen and why but I don’t feel any anticipation for the next episode. I feel it for Stargate Universe though!

Hey, did you guys talk about “Air part 3” (the third SGU episode) on this cast? I need to know if I should watch that before listening.

I’m endlessly amused when Audra get’s semi-torqued regarding “spoiler talk” about episodes she hasn’t seen yet, but that have aired years ago. LoL at the tiny hint of passive/aggressiveness in her voice when she talks about it!

One thing that amazes me about these casts is how anyone by this time could not have seen at least 50-100 episodes of SG1, especially considering how saturated the SciFi schedule was with them in the past years, plus the syndication on other cable channels. It was almost impossible to NOT watch a substantial amount of Stargate as a scifi fan because of this. Chuck and Audra, you have been exposed as having lives all those years! lol

Good call show, and thanks for mentioning again that it is impossible to condense all that is Stargate into 3-4 podcasts and that it was not your intention to even try. Like Star Trek, this was a must-cover epic franchise, and I’m sure you’ll be revisiting it in the future.

Now, back to the Cosmos!

Well, you didn’t play my call, but Sean stole my “half of BSG guest starred on Stargate shows” comment, which was the humorous part. I also listed some of the people from other sci-fi shows who showed up in Stargate.

Dollhouse is fast catching up just after 2 seasons.

Hey, did you guys talk about “Air part 3” (the third SGU episode) on this cast? I need to know if I should watch that before listening.

I don’t think they did; I think this was just responses to calls, and then the Crue will catch up on their DVR’ed shows.

Thanks, guys, for keeping me awake and attentive on a very dreary, rain, cold Monday. As far as geek vs. nerd, I like Simon Pegg’s definition of a geek being an “enthusiastic fan” of something. And that something could be movies, music, art, history, woodworking, or several subjects at once. I think in the past maybe it applied to non-mainstream forms of media like science-fiction but it’s gotten a lot more relaxed now, if that makes sense. I agree with Juan that “nerd” seems to be a little more rigid and focused on very analytical, practical, mechanical-type things. Not so much with the imagination, as Audra might say.

And I agree with Chuck that geeks have more social skills in real-life than they do on TV or film (although I still think you should give Big Bang Theory another chance). Having a common passion brings people together. I’m an introvert and painfully shy by nature but if someone gets me talking about Lost or any Joss Whedon project, I’ll babble on like nobody’s business. I probably talk more during the four days of Dragon*Con than I do in a week when I’m back home.

Woo hoo! FIrst call! YAY!

Talking about other mythologies. There’s the Celtic god dude who’s a Goa’uld. So prolly most of the other mythologies were Goa’uld except for the Norse.

Which is why Norse Gods are so much more bad-sorrybarb than other gods, duh

For instance:

So…We got. Greek/Roman, Christian/Hebrew, Celtic, Indian, Sumerian, Irish, Mayan, and Chinese mythology represented in Goa’Ulds.

I’m sure there’s more, there’a nice long list here http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Goa’uld#Known_Goa.27uld

I got in NCTibby’s siggy!! Woo hoo!!

Wow…I guess I’m not the only one. I noticed from Audra’s last post that she only has 757 forum posts, but has 1,947 tweets. I have more tweets than forum posts too.

Sean’s brand new to twitter, but has 71 tweets versus 369 posts.

Meanwhile, Chuck has 3,190 tweets and 2,104 forum posts.

Other comparisons: Solai has 4,950 posts and 1,461 tweets. Topgun has 6,091 posts and 7,094 tweets. DawnAZ has 1,008 posts (yea OG!!!) and 1,373 tweets. Bkitty has 981 posts and 5,253 tweets. Emilyfromohio has 1,108 posts and 4,322 tweets. Thotful has 7,890 posts and 7,344 tweets.

Either way - it’s good to be able to talk some SciFi!

I’d love to go on, but the family is going crazy getting ready for school/work.

Shooter out.

Hehe. I couldn’t resist, Audra. I’d transcribe that whole “mutant B-team” conversation if I could. Have fun driving the mail truck once you evolve that prehensile tail.

Y’know, I don’t tweet very much either. Mainly because my life is boring, but also because I feel pressure to be witty in 140 characters. And that’s not gonna’ happen. But give me time and I’ll get to that treasured OG status.

Stayed up too late watching Cosmos. Too cold outside and don’t want to go to work. Ugh.

My Fantasy Sci-fi team:

Eli (SGU)
TJ (SGU)
Boyd (Dollhouse)
Miles (LOST)
Ando (Heroes)

Hm just ongoing stuff and no repeats?

Scott (SGU)
Demetri Noh(FlashForward)
Sawyer (Lost) (Def first round pick)
Victor (Dollhouse)
Henry Foss (Sanctuary) (Sleeper pick)

Holy Crap - it’s Thur and I’m just getting around to listening to this podcast. Looking forward to it. Got a long drive coming up and I’m taking the Crue with me.

Hmmm…This is tough. Assuming no repeats, only active shows, so no movies or cancelled/finish shows, and only one person per show/movie (so no all SG-1 team either), otherwise

Ripley (Alien(ssss))
Carter (SG-1)
Captain “Mal” Reynolds (Firefly)
Saul Tigh (As played by Michael Hogan on BSG)
Sarah Conner (As played by Linda Hamilton on Terminator)

Would be my picks.

Currently, I would go with…

Dr. Henry Deacon (Eureka)
Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary & I still haven’t seen the series permiere yet)
Chloe Armstrong (SGU) - I would have gone with Eli, but Fenatic already picked him
Peter Petrelli (Heroes)
Claudia Donovan (Warehouse 13 & Sleeper pick)

Shooter out.

All-time picks:
Aeryn Sun (Farscape)
Alex Krycek (The X-Files)
Jack Bristow (Alias)
Leeloo (The Fifth Element)
Helo (BSG)

Current Picks:
Sayid (Lost)
Noah “HRG” Bennet (Heroes)
Casey (Chuck)
Dean Winchester (Supernatural)
Daniel Faraday (Lost)

Back when I used to spend time on the Roosterteeth boards, I ran a fantasy Red vs. Blue thing for a while. The idea was simple: all of the show’s characters were assigned points for things they were likely (low points) or unlikely (high points) to do the following week (minor characters got points just for showing up.) Each person would assemble a four-man team out of the choices, and would get points based upon what happened in the next show.

No reason we couldn’t do something like that, but it works best for a show that’s had a few seasons under its belt.

My teams. Of all time:

  1. Dr./Col. Sam Carter
  2. Dr. Helen Magnus
  3. Geberal Jack O’neill
  4. Susan Sto Helit
  5. Dr. Daniel Jackson

Current:

  1. Dr. Helen Magnus
  2. Chuck Bartowski
  3. Sheriff Jack Carter
  4. Susan Sto Helit
  5. Irene Frederic

Just gotta say Brava! to Audra for her reading of the intro. That is all.
