They just released a Final Cut of the pilot “Children of the Gods” Brad Wright did not want to have the nudity but showtime made him put it in. It is a great recut that is family friendly.
Lots of things to reply to in this episode, but I think most important would be to recount the time I saw Don S. Davis (Hammond) at a convention sometime around 2003.
This was the second convention I had gone too, and I had just started watching SG1. There was a panel with most of the TV and Film guests there in a fairly small room. I got there kind of early and sat in the second row, since the first row was right up against the stage, and I didn’t want to be too in the presenters faces. A few minutes later a big guy comes in and sat right in front of me. I’m thinking “who the hell is this guy?” when he turned around, and it was General Hammond! He said hi, and got up on stage a minute later when they started the panel.
Turns out he’s a pretty interesting guy too. His main interest growing up was in art, mainly sculpting and painting. He got into theater when he was working on the sets for a play. The actors were rehearsing and needed somebody who was strong enough to lift one of the dancers up in the air, and he was recruited into the play. He made his main career in acting but he never gave up artwork. Even during SG1 (and after) he was still doing sculpture, painting and woodwork, and even had his own art shows. He was also actually in the military long before he just played it on TV.
His best line of the panel: “General Hammond had a sex life”. Don’t remember the context exactly.
I only saw him that one day at the con, but he was a really a classy guy, who really enjoyed meeting the fans. I know lots of other fans have great stories about the man, and I encourage anyone else who had the opportunity to meet him to share.
This is the page for his art, which is pretty darn impressive: http://www.donsdavisart.com
I’m slowly making my way through the podcast (ashamedly having not watched the show yet… I’m getting to it slowly but surely!), but your remarks on the Kazon are right on! They could have been really cool, but instead we get somehwat dopey storylines on them, very little development, and Seska gets thrown away on them, too. What would have been awesome: to see Seska v. Seven of Nine on Voyager.
Goo rasslin’!! Let’s Get Ready to RUMBLE!!
Whut?!? Not what you meant? grumble grumble
Loving this arc so far. Getting into SG-1 was one of my major college bonding experiences with one of my best friends and my now-husband and me. We went to a Stargate convention in Dallas a few years ago, which was awesome. My only regret was not getting to meet Don S. Davis, whose panels were the day before. Speaking of, has anyone else noticed an awful lot of people named Don S. Davis around? It’s the name of a car dealer here in Houston, and was the name of my college Wildlife Diseases professor.
Also, I may have squealed like a mofo when Cliff Simon showed up. You weren’t there, you don’t know!
Cliff Simon is awesome.
I will also admit that I did shed a little tear when I heard that Mr. Davis passed away shortly before Dragon Con last year. I cannot tell you the wide ranging people that had something good to say about him when they saw my memorial badge.
@ 1:09:20 The Next Generation episode Chuck mentioned was titled ‘The Chase’ which is funny since while explaining it Chuck said, “Where essentially they explain, they go on this chase…” I laughed. Subliminally, Chuck knew the name of the episode.
Audra, it was Season 6. 2 points to Ravenclaw.
There is a connection to the Original Series as well. The humanoid alien is believed to be a Preserver. As explained in the 'cast, similar to Stargate this was Star Trek’s way of explaining why some many aliens looked like humans and all the planets look like Earth.
I have to say, I find your salesmanship of Stargate very effective. Using Trek analogies is very persuading.
I don’t know. Firefly analogies might be equally effective.
As too the length of the Podcast, I prefer the longer (2 hour +) episodes, but I understand if you want to make them shorter. Back when I had my old iPod I had to sometimes delete stuff to make room for the 'casts, but with my new iPod that has not been a problem. It can be intimidating for newbies to have to download 70MB episodes just to try it out. On the other hand it seems like you guys have plenty more to say then would fit in an hour and a half…
I agree with Fenatic, I aslo had to delete stuff on my old Ipod for room but now that I have the Iphone its not a problem. I found GWC late and the first cast I downloaded we like 2.5 hours and I loved it. I then erased everything on my ipod and got all the old casts. Id love to have the 2+ hour casts every week.
Thanks to this arc I’ve watched the first 3 episodes of SG SG-1.
And…loving it.
Very cool that the 7 seasons are available on Hulu!
You mean I can finally see what happened with the Ori?
You could see it 2 years ago!
Ori are seasons 9 and 10 plus Ark of Truth, so if only the first seven seasons are on Hulu, no.
I just started watching, Season 1, Episode 1. I was afraid of this. I looked at the daunting scope and tried to avoid. So now, I’m in. See ya in a few months. BTW, I’m watching on Hulu so no soft-core.
Sweet! Captain Carter kicks Mongol butt in a knifefight in Ep4. She even drew first blood! Amanda is starting to grow on me.
I entirely agree, I’d far prefer the longer podcasts.
That’s all I have to say right now, gotta run off and pick up my takeout!
I watched SG1 from the very beginning. I distinctly remember that the first 2 seasons were shown very late at night. I remember staying up on a Monday night to watch SG1 and The Outer limits. The next morning always sucked, and I missed a couple of episodes by falling a sleep. Although they seemed to give up after season 2, so I remember having to wait ages to see the resolution to the cliffhanger. Since then though Sky One have shown an episode nearly everyday and I must have seen every episode around 3 times.
We didn’t get the R rated version of the pilot, so it came as a bit of a shock when I caught it on DVD.
