I loved this show for the first 6 or 7 years. Once they made O’neil a General I thought it went down hill fast. Plus, the Ori bored me. The Goa’uld were such great bad guys because they could create a variety of super villians all under the Goa’uld umbrella. Apophis was the spoiled prince trying to fill the king’s (Ra’s) shoes, Nirti was the mad scientist experimenting on innocent subjects, Yu was a Chinese warlord with Alzheimers, Ba’al was the charming but slightly insane terrorist, and Anubis was the mad magic user. The Ori, and Wraith for that matter, were one trick ponies by comparison.
Like the crue…I didnt get into it at first either. But then I watched an ep or two…really watched…and thot, ya know…that O’Neill dude is funny as hell! And as time went on, I really got into it. But it was the humor that got me.
In the first few minutes of the cast, that you wont alwys find that kind of humor in a lot of sci-fi, and used Trek as an example. Totally agree. Which is why I was caught flat footed with the Star Trek: New Frontier novels by Peter David. Very Trek…but funny as hell. Definitely worth a look on Audible or at your local Borders…
If you run out of things to say, you guys could fill in the rest of the 45mins with Sean doing impersonations! That would be fun!
PS I miss that goat noise
Pretty sure that Uins - the lizard that kidnaps Daniel who’s going to kill him until Daniel talks “him” out of it - is a girl. I think.
Yup. All of them deserve some love. Sprinkle in some Asgard love, and bake for two hours at 375 deg.
All I can say it that I totally agree. Why shall I repeat what you said so well. I did like the Wraith until they made them more human like and some friendly.
I like your recipe.
Thank you, Leah. Tasty SG-1 goodness!
Oh, question for one of the crue… I noticed a bleeping of the words “Darth Vader” when describing bad guys. My reaction was “huh?”
So, I ask, “huh?”
Yes! I 2nd that “huh?” It was like Jimmy Kimmel’s unecessary censorship, but I can’t imagine what would replace “Darth Vader”. Please explain.
What is the kid-appropriateness of this (and the other) SG series? I’m always looking for sci-fi and fantasy shows that my whole family will enjoy, that we can get into and watch together (a la Doctor Who). I don’t mind watching non-family appropriate shows, but since my son, particularly has shown an affinity for sci-fi and fantasy, it’s a lot of fun to introduce him to new shows/movies/books/ and share in that together when possible. It’s always a bonus when my 6 yr old daughter can watch too and when my husband also enjoys it.
SG-1 is pretty friendly for kids. Atlantis, especially early on, might be a bit much for a six year old.
Although take that with a grain of salt, since I don’t have kids myself.
I’m going to bet a quarter it’s an “in joke” as some Darth Vadery-based material on a GWC t-shirt was recently deemed un-useable due to copyright stuff. Just my guess though.
Ah! I think you’re right. I should have remembered that.
If so, I submit my hearty lol !!! Because, as everyone is aware, the universe as we know it would have ceased to exist should Sean’s shirt be allowed to be produced, sold and worn!
I can’t speak to the old show as I don’t remember what they look like. I can tell you for sure that no, they do not relate. The heiroglyphs are direct copies or adaptations of actual Egyptian heiroplyphs. If I remember correctly the symbols on the flags are Greek in nature.
It really depends on your values. If you’re strictly opposed to guns & military style violence, then you probably don’t want your kids watching it. But, if you let your kids watch other good vs. evil type stuff (Star Wars, X-Men, G.I. Joe), Stargate’s on a par with those as far as there not being a focus on sex, lewd behavior, and graphic gore.
Now, from what I hear, Stargate: Universe is rumored to be darker and more adult oriented than SG1 & Atlantis, more like the recent Battlestar Galactica series.
Ha!! Listening to Bonus Podcast #135 on a complete whim…16 minutes in, Wolfbrand Chili discussion!!!
What are the odds?
Ya know, if you guys did a three hour 'cast on chili, I would listen and I most likely would laugh my ass off and have a great time.
I love SG-1, but I also love rambling funny stuff like only you can bring.
If you are looking at the SG-1 DVDs, you should skip the pilot. That was shown on Showtime, and it would be rated R. The other episodes would be PG for some violence, mainly gun and sci-fi weapons. I would recommend watching some of the episodes before your daughter sits down with you.
