GWC Podcast #181: The Guild, Part I

Welcome to the forum RoyRay! Glad to know you enjoyed the podcast.

Iā€™m not disagreeing with anything Masked Revenger said. Iā€™m just adding an EVE perspective. EVE have corps and entire alliances devoted to RP and they make it a point not to break character. EVE is mostly text chat as well, but these corps/alliances are so RP oriented they would stay in character even over EVE voice, Teamspeak, or Vent. Most corps (90-95%) donā€™t RP however.

That said, The developers of EVE want RPers to feel welcomed and thereā€™s an entire sub-forum devoted to them where Out of Character posts and discussions are not allowed. It can be entertaining to watch players from opposing factions go at it.
Intergalactic Summit and Intergalactic Summit Resource Thread

An in-character, role-playing center for the capsuleers of New Eden. Forge alliances and make friends, resolve disputes or declare hostilities.

You could consider game mechanics as a DM/GM since they ā€œdice rollā€ hits and damage among other things. But, people GMs also exist for technical and harassment petitions (like getting stuck in station or something). And, EVE have NPCs as well. I hope this answers your questions.

just got my season one DVD of the guild today, though I saw it when it was almost done with season one originally

but am I the only one who watching this has an urge to play WoW? which is freaking odd for meā€¦considering Iā€™ve tried WoW about 5 times and got bored with it after a week each time I tried :stuck_out_tongue:

No you are not the only one. It is taking all the control I have not to sign up for the free trial. But if I did that my wife would probably divorce me

As my spouse would say, the key to avoiding that outcome would be convincing your wife to play, too

Oh I wish it was that easy. She thinks that all computer games are a waste of time.

just say youā€™re writing a book about addictions and youā€™re doing your research!

Curious, I guess I knew a lot of men play women characters in MMOs but I try not to think of it, mostly from memories of hs and my sister playing mmos and guys being generally dicks (breaking rule #1 of not sucking: donā€™t be a dick) about playing women. Those particular men havenā€™t improved with age.

Iā€™m conflicted. On the one hand, I think you should be whoever you want to be. But there have been times when seriously inappropriate stuff goes on and its even more shocking when it comes from a woman character, who, if you believe what the person says, is a guy. But in the end? be who you want, but respect everyone else.

If I may interject my two cents, I play female characters simply because thatā€™s what I see on my screen, and I like looking at women a lot more than looking at men. Itā€™s not that deep an experience for me, personally, and doesnā€™t change my behavior online. Itā€™s simply aesthetics.

So are most things in life. Like TV or moviesā€¦or virtually anything that isnā€™t breathing, eating, and sleeping.

I agree everyone should be able to play they way the want as long as it doesnā€™t disturb other players (DIE you frackinā€™ griefers! [Iā€™m not bitter at all.]). That said, I do take umbrage against guys who play female characters and use their characters to manipulate other guysā€¦ d: Yes, I know itā€™s tempting because they can get items and currency for free. And, Iā€™m not in the ā€œShow us your breasts or shut upā€ camp (yes, they exist). I wish guys were wiser with these interactions and realize when they are being manipulated.

Just goes to show how typical the typical male thinks I guess. ā€œIf Iā€™m nice to her, maybe sheā€™ll be my girlfriend. Duh huhā€¦ā€

Reminds me of the definition my brother gave the internet: where men are men, women are men, and children are the FBI.

On the topic of men playing women, my personal taste is to play whatever the character callā€™s for. Some characters are naturally women. Some are men. My usual default is to play a man, for the simple reason than thatā€™s what I am, and also what Iā€™m used to reading about in the kinds of genre that these games usually protray. But, I have plenty of women characters running around, too.

As ever, I think people should play with whatever character they choose. But the idea that a game would be designed to have one sex be more appropriate in some roles than others bothers meā€¦ but thatā€™s not an issue with the players but rather with the game itself. :frowning:

My (female) friends and I who game do enjoy criticizing the totally unrealistic positions that the female characters sometimes take - seriously, look at the arching backs sometime, boobs out and all. That would hurt, if you had to stand like that all the time. :o

I think The Guild is decent, Season 2 definitely better than 1, I loved Season 3 Ep 1 (Hwil Hweaton!), but there is just too much talk about WoW going on lately. It was last night, when I only just started Season 3, that I realized the show is about a fantasy MMO that doesnā€™t exist and not WoW. And I finally found myself a real-life example of projection. If it wasnā€™t for my son, who leaves me with little time to game at all, Iā€™d probably already be back in Azeroth.

Those rules and stuff are real and theyā€™re good to have. Raiding and being part of a 10-40 person group of players is awesome, but when you spend an hour doing nothing because someone hasnā€™t shown up, it sucks. And all of the guilds Iā€™ve been in have been about 2:1 men to women. And my wife and I played a lot, and Iā€™m pretty positive sheā€™s a girl.

A fun arc, but Iā€™ll be glad when itā€™s over and I can stop being reminded of how much fun WoW was. Luckily, other MMOā€™s Iā€™ve played (Anarchy, FFXI, D&D Online, LotRO) werenā€™t fun enough to warrant such longing.

EDIT: about faces - itā€™s been a few years since I played, but WoW only has a certain amount of faces, all bodies are the same, and there are only a few faces that people generally like well enough, especially the females. Itā€™s gear that normally sets people apart, which Blizzard encourages.

Yayā€¦ Iā€™m not the only second lifer in hereā€¦ i feel better now!

Speaking of second life, They have a couple really good BSG related RP sims. Iā€™m in the BSG 47 sim, and next week, theres a brand new one being launched thats set in the universe during the first cylon war, ala razor flashbacks. You too can be Larry! (lead pipe not included). If anyone is in SL, my name is Orpheus Angkarn.

Iā€™m Church Sockington. Feel free to look me up. (Iā€™m still unclear on how to do thatā€¦)
