GWC Podcast #178: Alien

Sorry, doll. There. Are. Four. Lights. I mean Alien movies. the first, which we’ve just seen, Aliens (with badass marines) Alien3 in the men’s prison (with Charles S. Dutton as badass Dillon) and Alien Resurrection w/ (not really badass) Winona, written by JOSS WHEDON?!?!?!?!?

Juan Belushi?

Whut?! Alien 4 was written by Joss W? I did not know that. Now I’m intrigued to rewatch.

Okay, that was unexpected. My drink has been successfully blown out my nose…

I’m pretty sure Juan’s a lot taller than Belushi was. And having actally met both Popper and Juan, I can say for certain that Popper is a lot taller.

They are certainly equal in the pipes department. Dude can sing!
Great back up and base line too… very impressive.

Okay, I’m calling it now:
PODCAST 178: THE BUKAKE-CAST !

I think Capt. Dallas’ failings as a leader harken back to something DawnAZ stated earlier in this thread, mainly that this crew was comprised of regular folks, (excluding Ash the Spunky Android). A tugboat, in fact. The largest issue Dallas had probably had to deal with before this was filling out shipping forms or replacing the tiny lightbulbs in the Mother Room when they burned out. This incident was so beyond the scope of anything he’d ever encountered that he immediately ceased being “the leader”, at least in his own mind. If the rest of the crew hadn’t continued to look to him for answers I’m sure he would have been more than happy to let somebody else call the shots.

On an unrelated note: I saw the movie in the theater when it came out, probably one of the first I would have seen without a parent. And the scene that I would always return to, that freaked me out the most, or made the most mental impact: Jones the Cat, watching, in shadow, as Harry Dean Stanton’s Brett meets his end. Just a terrifyingly good several seconds of filmaking that will be with me forever.

bwahahahakakekakehaha!!!

  1. “Android bukake!” BWAAA!!!

  2. Hob’s Big Love - Alien connection: Alien 1 = Harry Dean Stanton. Alien 2 = Bill Paxton.

  3. I, too, learned what little I know of the touch-typing method from playing Castle Wolfenstein.

Don’t drink the schnapps!

Alien^3 is good. At very least, it’s not as bad as the rap it gets. I’ll save that discussion for a later date.

I’m wracking my brain trying to remember if i saw Alien in the theater when it first came out. My parents let me see Star Wars and Star Trek:The Motion Picture without them, so that was around the same time. I was like in Junior high maybe. There was a long gap (compared to nowadays) between the 1st and 2nd Alien movies–7 years. It’s possible I saw it Alien first on TV.

I agree. Alien 3 sets a totally different tone and mood than 1 and 2, which is good.

Forgot to mention in my previous post how much Geordi’s Lament just GROCs (only a ‘C’ and no ‘K’ right?). My wife and I were groccing out to it last night.

I don’t know if I would be that harsh on Dallas. Yes, he is completely out of his league and he knows it. But he realizes he is still the captain and is thus the one who is going to have to step up and deal with the alien. He was willing to seal himself up in the air tubes to try to flush the alien to the airlock knowing it was likely a no-return mission…

Several things for me to say. First I am quite surprised & amused that bukkake even came up!

I had one semester of typing in high school, it was pretty much a blow off class. However, it gave me a very crude base to build on when I started playing Everquest. WHen you are raiding without voice chat, you can’t look at the keys to type, You have to know what’s going on on the screen! EQ is also the reason I learned how to build a computer.

I am of the opinion that Alien 3 gets the rep it has because of the comparison of the other 2. By itself it’s a decent movie, not outstanding, but good. It suffers because everyone has to compare it to the first 2.

Lastly, Wes Craven was writer/producer for Freddy Krueger. The actor is Robert Englund.

Speaking of typing, I always thought the QWERTY key board was invented because it was actually relatively inefficient. In the olden days people could type faster than the swing arms could keep up and they would get jammed, so a lay out was designed that slowed down the typist, but at least kept things moving. Could be an urban legend though…

I had heard that same story, Phil!

Time for me to bust out the microphone.

I don’t think it was designed to slow the typist, per se, but rather to arrange the mechanical arms in a pattern that would rarely jam due to frequently associated letters being next to each other*. WikiP is unclear on the matter.

*And yeah, E is next to R etc. on the keyboard, but the trick was where their mechanical arms were in the typing mechanism.

I’ve always thought of Alien as a suspense-horror film, Aliens as an action movie, and Alien3 as a prison movie with an alien. What I really like about the first three is how each one explored the universe, the xenomorphs and the Ripley character in different ways. Also, each is very influenced by their respective directors.

I’ve got mixed feeling about the 4th that I’ll wait on until we get there.

Speaking of Xenomorph - anyone else fondly remember the 3 person side-scroller arcade game? Total rip-off of the Alien franchise.

I always think of films like Gattaca and the recent Moon as being more like Alien. Not chase stories like Alien, but a mystery set in space with suspense elements. If you have not seen Moon – go. now. Best movie this summer.

I read a lot of the Dark Horse Alien comics in the '90s and liked them for the most part. Very dark in tone and none too kind when exploring human nature.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the 'cast. Thanks for doing this arc!

found the answer. if anyone cares. http://home.earthlink.net/~dcrehr/whyqwert.html

Hmmmm, sounds like a bunch of propaganda from the QWERTY lobby to me…
