GWC Podcast #174: Harry Potter, Part II

OH! My blonde.

I’m very sorry…

One of the reasons religious people are against HP is that magic is part of the occult. There is a great book “How Harry Cast His Sell,” written by John Granger, who is a Christian and celebtrates the books and encourages all Christians to read them.

USA Today did their usual hatchet job reporting on the Wizard Rock genre. Wonder if they got the idea for the stroy from GWC?

http://www.usatoday.com/life/music/news/2009-07-15-potter-bands_N.htm

…not to mention totally overlooking Tonks & the Aurors.

It was mentioned that there might be Lord of the Rings rock…Well, I haven’t been able to find any except for one song. There’s a wrock band named Lord of the Strings that does one LotR song. Here’s their myspace; listen to “You Shall Not Pass.” http://www.myspace.com/lotsrock

Lord of the Rhymes

Hence my use of the term ‘hatchet job.’

re: Sean crawling over glass when told he “can’t” do something.

We seem to have a family tradition of that with my family. Especially the McEvoy’s on my mother’s side of the family. (yes that would be the Irish McEvoy’s! Conincidence? I think not)

For example, my cousin was told by her boyfriend several years ago, that she was “not allowed” to dye her hair black. She wasn’t srue she wanted to at the time, was just kicking around the idea. The next day her hair was a nice deep black!

One of my more poruder moments with my mother was when The Davinci Code was forbidden to be read by Catholics by Papal decree. My mother really hadn’t had much interest in the book, despite it’s popularity. When she heard that The Pope said she couldn’t read it, she went out & bought it. She enjoyed the heck out of it!

Thank you, Rev. sEan, for your quote in GWC #174 ! Your anti-censorship rant is proof that we haven’t been wasting our time here. You guys should cherish your amendment rights. Most people on this planet don’t have any. Thanks for reminding us what a rocking summer movie Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade was.

I’ve mentioned this before once, but back in '89, the movie caught my
imagination to the point that I bought the classical music soundtrack
for the movie ([i]which, btw the material gets totally rehashed in Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace[i] - listen carefully and you’ll see what I mean!).

If you were wondering about the Indy 3 quote; the link for the soundbite is here :

and if you’ve ever tried spoofing Sean Connery’s accent; you should read this here :

Hey, have you ever heard Sean Connery sing?

nah! It’s totally ADR’ed.

You could do a google search on “Tolkien music”

see here : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rls=com.microsoft:en-us:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7IBMA_en&ei=ORRiSqbdHaXe6APU5ImrDw&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=tolkien+music&spell=1

The first hit is particularly relevant : The Tolkien Music List
See here : http://www.tolkien-music.com/

Here’s a Tolkien death metal list : http://www.listal.com/list/metal-bands-names-inspired-tolkien

There’s even a Tolkien radio station (?) : http://www.last.fm/tag/tolkien

Cheers!

Speaking of anti-censorship, did any of you see what Amazon.com did to people who bought the Kindle edition of 1984?

http://io9.com/5317703/amazon-secretly-removes-1984-from-the-kindle

Could they have done something any more ironic than this?

You can get the complete text of 1984,

here : http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks01/0100021.txt

here : http://www.mondopolitico.com/library/1984/1984.htm

here : http://www.george-orwell.org/

You can even read the study guides,

here : http://www.enotes.com/1984

and some commentary, here : http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/may/10/1984-george-orwell

Very interesting, all that with the stealing of your Orwell off your Kindle in the middle of the night. Refund or not, it’s very unsettling to know that Amazon can do what it wants with your property, be it electronic or digital.

That’s just not right no matter how you look at it. They should have warned people first and explained about the copyright before deleting it from the Kindles.

I found the comment saying Kindle users should be glad it wasn’t Farenheit 451 and their Kindles catch fire kinda clever.

No, they should not have deleted it at all.

If a publisher violates copyright and you buy the book, the dispute is with the publisher, not you. You get to keep the book.

This is the classic “heads I win, tails you lose” maneuver from the rightsholders. They say they need DRM so digital copies will behave like material copies (why that needs to be, only they know) and then they turn around and do stuff you could never do with material copies. Like make them disappear.

Frak 'em. You’re safer torrenting than purchasing, at least as far as anything with DRM goes.

You are right Pike. I meant to say “instead of deleting” in that comment. Once the purchase was made it is up to the copywrite holder to go after the publisher. I should have reread my comment better before posting it instead of just looking for typos.

while it’s certainly unfortunate, i think the fault lies with amazon when they sold it, since they obviously didn’t do their homework.

and as shady as copyright holders are, in my opinion it never justifies theft.

Well, copyright infringement isn’t theft. Regardless, this case certainly justifies it, at least for those affected.

just got this clip from my Facebook…
