There goes your summer! Get ready for a lot of late nights!
Beauxbaton’s in the book is actually described as being a coed school and there are boys mentioned as having come along as well. It wasn’t ever clear to me if the entire school went to Hogwarts, or just the potential selectees. I consider it to be the prior as the Tournament was meant to be a pretty grand event.
Fairly positive it was a selected group of students. Boths chools were simplified for the film, which leaned out a massive sequence of events. I would have loved this one broken up into two parts, but as it was, it’s a ludicrously tight, fun film.
Hrm. It could be seen as stereotypes of effeminate French and hyper-masculine Russians.
I agree about their being boys at the French school in the book - but I don’t remember if there were girls at Krum’s school. Also agree about the selection of students - remember they only brought older students, i.e. students who would be eligible to participate in the tournament.
At the very least, Fleur’s sister Gabrielle came along, I believe she was 11.
Did she come along for the whole thing? I thought she was only there for the 2nd task and like the feast afterwards and then the 3rd
This is where things get a little sketchy… AFAIK, she isn’t mentioned in the book until the 2nd task. In the film she’s there from the first, She’s the acrobatic person at the Beauxbaton’s entrance.
Just to give an early chronology, IIRC:
The Switchblade Sisters wrote the first (noted) Wizard Rock song, “Ode to Harry” They then played at one HP convention as “The Wyrd Sisters.” (The bulk of their set being their usual repetoire.)
A year or two later, Harry and the Potters were the first Wizard Rock (aka WRock) band to form, originally as a joking response to a lot of no-shows at a house concert. The positive response kept them going.
Their friends formed Draco and the Malfoys as a joking surprise opener for HatP a tad later. The positive response kept them going.
Their friend Matt then formed The Whomping Willows (composed entirely of Matt.) I’m not sure how much of a joke this one was, but positive response kept it going.
The Parselmouths came in pretty soon after that. (I think they were the first notable girl WRock group.) Next thing you knew, there were several hundred WRock bands.
We picked this up for our kid whose reading HP. Looks interesting, tho I haven’t really looked at in myself yet.
Get Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them as well, they’re kinda a set. The only bad thing I can say about either is I wish they were longer
Agreed. Both books are a fun read. Fantastic Beasts has notes by Harry and Ron scribbled throughout… Awesome.
Chuck, were you thinking of The Nelsons?
I’m under the impression that Hogwarts/Beuxbatons/Durmstrang were simply the oldest of the wizarding schools.
Wasn’t there a passing reference to a school in Salem? Anybody remember that?
Pretty sure it’s in Quidditch through the Ages. They also don’t play Quidditch in America they play…uh…Kobblepot? I think.
Nope. http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Salem_Witches_Institute It’s in Goblet and their game is Quodpot.

Also best wizard in the world? Dumbledore? American =D
Thanks, DP. But I’m intrigued by “The idea of taking a ball from an existing game and accidentally modifying it, thus creating the ball of a different game, has been in the British public consciousness for many years following a successful television advert campaign for a chocolate bar.”
Any UKians know what that’s a reference to?
Yes. Yes I was.
Rugby. American football is derived from it I think. Here’s a pic of a rugby ball:
 No, I mean the chocolate bar thing.
