GWC Podcast #164: Star Trek X: Nemesis

In our penultimate Trek movie arc podcast we leap into Nemesis and get ready for next week’s Trek XI premiere! Highlights: we note the seeming popularity of Betazoid weddings (and Picard’s joy in attending one), enjoy Nemesis’ disco-friendly patent leather villian suit, discuss the strategy of firing weapons while cloaked, hear Sean’s description of Reman knives (he owns a couple), suggest there might be better tools for blood testing, recommend solid doors for villains wishing to hide their medical secrets, love the Scimitar’s cool visual design, try to remember if we’ve ever heard about Romulan money, kid about the videogame-y re-mastered HD TOS Enterprise, talk Corbomite Maneuver (read: BS ‘em all!) and Ron Howard’s Trek-prolific brother, and look very, very forward to next week’s premiere!

I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but now I’m curious – has there ever been a Betazoid wedding (i.e. with everyone naked) in an actual Star Trek episode or movie?

I’m pretty sure they show one briefly in the episode where Lwaxana shows up on the Enterprise to get married. Hmm. Now I’ve gotta check.

I’m only a bit into the podcast, but my guess is that the Remans were indigenous to Remus. The Romulans moved to Romulus after they broke off from the Vulcans, so there are no genetics in common.

hello, been listening for about a year and half and finally got round to signing up! lol just started listening to the new podcast and theres a bit where you say that kirk has his own maneuver but there is an episode in TNG where, if i remember right, picard has his own maneuver, in an episode, i forget the name but two starfleet whessels (chekhov lol) are training and get boarded and the enterprise does the picard maneuver and the helms guy on the other whessel says theres no defence agenst it or something, ill let the hive mind fill in the details lol love you guys and love the community would have been awesome to get to the meet up but bit hard since i live in England, talk sooon x

Yep, that’s Cost of Living, where she decided to go “traditional” to scare off her would-be-husband. Also the episode with Worf, Troi, Alexander, and Lwaxana in the mudbath.

The Picard Manuever was when he made a short range warp jump so the ship appeared to be in two places at once. He the tried to use it against the Enterprise D when that crazy Ferengi whose son he killed brought him the Stargazer, previously thought destroyed, with a mind-control orb stashed on board. Riker’s solution was to throw out a tractor beam and catch the ship, but it was in a later episode that during war games where Riker commands an older ship against Picard’s Enterprise, that Riker used a similar tactic against the Ferengi who’d ambushed both ships. Picard tells the Ferengi he’d rather destroy the other ship than let them have it and fires a torpedo which detonates directly in front of the older ship right before it warps away (which it wasn’t supposed to be capable of before Wesley cheated, and it warps in reverse which we’ve never seen a ship do), creating the illusion that the ship has been destroyed. It was a much later episode where Lwaxana shows up engaged to an old fuddy-duddy who doesn’t want a Betazoid wedding, but Alexander talks sense into her and she shows up in Ten Forward naked, and the fuddy-duddy calls it off in a huff. I had always thought that the Remans were the Vulcan off-shoots who settled on Remus like the Romulans settled on Romulus, which makes sense to me considering the Viceroy’s rather Vulcan-like mind probe of Troi, but perhaps not; either way I think it’s been thousands of years since the Vulcan off-shoots settled both planets (and I think it’s just our English translations, in their own language their races and planets probably have nothing to do with Terran Romulus and Remus). I think this movie gets a bad rap; C,S, & A are totally right that it feels more epic and cinematic than Insurrection, and that it had tough competition at release. But the film itself DOES have some problems… I mean… this was Star Trek TEN for criminy’s sake! Why not pull out all the stops? Where’s our Spock cameo, last seen ON ROMULUS! Where’s a Lwaxana scene (sure they get diverted on their way to Betazed, but even a few lines on a screen would’ve been a nice touch). What do we get instead? ADMIRAL Janeway? Promoted for being lost for seven years and handing future tech to the Borg (while admittedly bloodying their Collective nose). A jeep? I mean, a really cool jeep, sure, but… why is there a jeep? There are so many missed opportunities; there’s a nice deleted scene between Data and Picard where Data’s checking out Picard’s flute from The Inner Light, but a lamer one where Picard gets another whitebread dweeb new first officer, rather than promoting Worf, and then a lame joke where he gets a fancy seatbelt on the captain’s chair. I also thought a nice touch might have been if Shinzon had looked down at the metal sticking out of his chest and briefly laughed, a la Picard getting stabbed by a Nausican in Tapestry. And why is stellar cartography on the Enterprise E so much less impressive than on the Enterprise D? And why didn’t they bother to think that the Scimitar might attack them before they reached the fleet as they passed through a giant, random green cloud that blocks communications? But hey, oh well, there’s cool stuff here also, and I like what they’ve done with most of the post-Nemesis TNG books and with the four-part Countdown comic books recently released, and the Star Trek Online MMO is looking pretty right on, so even as we get stoked for the franchise reboot movie, the 24th century is alive and well.

i actually love the hive mind thanx  and yeah i found the best thing about nemisis was the ship raming, ive been screming at the screen for years, someone fly into another ship i wanna see it haha, and then they did it in this . . .awesome and then in bsg, totally sweet as lol and if Patrick Stewart kept that jeep thingy then can you imagine him driving it around. . .that would be amazing lol x

I was watching some of the extras on the DVD last night and he talked about wanting to keep it… I never thought he’d be the type, but it’s kind of awesome

That’s a monster analysis, monsterjester. Nice TNG episode memory. I agree about the Jeep.

And welcome to the boards, Ben!

Welcome, ben!

AHHH! I totally forgot to talk about the ship ramming last night, which IS the coolest part of the movie. We got a really late start on the recording and were pretty darn tired. The ship ramming and Data’s flying to rescue Picard were both huge moments for this movie. The level of detail in the ramming scene is really impressive and feels so real as debris flies out at you toward the screen.

thanx guys, C,S, & A were right, you are the nicest guys!!! glad to be on the boards finally after listening to the podcasts at work every day i even went back and listened to all the old ones haha think i started back when it was single digits lol, and i would loooooove to be in the meetups but kinda expensive to fly over, but how good does the new star trek gonna be ooooohh yeah swwwwweeet, but anyway thought id sign up so i could finally talk to people on the same wave lenght, being a massive scifi fan x

OMG hello Audra, wow star struck you three are like as famous to me as the bsg crew haha, i remember i started listening to you guys back when you Audra were anounced to be the coolest, and you did that version of the KT tunstall song, “in the CIC, cic its where i wanna be” that was awesome (il let the hive mind fill in the podcast number), and did shaun actually throw a printer aganst the wall, i heard once in a podcast? lol wow i feel that frustration lol being a graphic designer myself haha but anyways i started around the 20-30 mark, silent for soo long lol and yeah when they flew the battlestar in to the base i was literally out of my seat saying AMAZING lol i had to wait TWO WEEKS after the air date to watch it with couple friends x

I always thought it was his shirt tucks when he would sit and stand.
:stuck_out_tongue:

Heh. The shirt tug. Nice one.

The Kirk Maneuver is when The GF points out that my fly is open.

Thats what the fans say not the show. Those uniforms must ride up when you sit down.

So true.

In the idyllic future of the Star Trek universe, they have eliminated poverty, racism, war… and wedgies.

Welcome n Ben! The forums and folks here are pretty frakkin awesome - so enjoy yourself.

Audra said ramming…heh heh heh heh

Thought the galactica ramming in the finale was comprable to the enterprise ramming. Think Enterprise ramming was slightly better cuz of the shot after where you see big E really wedged in there.

…That came out wrong, so wrong:eek:

Excellent podcast as usual. I always wondered why didn’t they use Patrick Stewart to play Shinzon. It would have made more sense as Shinzon was supposed to be a clone. Patrick Stewart would probably have had great fun playing an evil version of himself.
