GWC Podcast #135 (Bonus)

At least according to the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy:

However it goes on to say that what with space being the mind boggling size it is the chances of getting picked up by another ship within those thirty seconds are two to the power of two hundred and sixty-seven thousand seven hundred and nine to one against.

By a totally staggering coincidence that is also the telephone number of an Islington flat where Arthur once went to a very good party and met a very nice girl whom he totally failed to get off with — she went off with a gatecrasher.

Eddie the computer from starship “Heart of Gold”
“Here’s an interesting little notion. Did you realize that most people’s lives are governed by telephone numbers?”

Not necessarily, we’ve never been told how many hours there are in a Colonial “Day”.

What did the clock in “33” tell us about that, if anything?

They have a 12 hour clock.

I do not think the Colonial day is 34 hours long.

I’m 38 minutes into the 'cast and I’m going in a completely different direction from SeanChuckAudra. I don’t think ByBBQ8 is evil; I think she just has no reason to trust anyone else on the raptor. And I don’t think Gaeta thinks she is scary in a Glenn Close sort of way; I think her he is not sure what to make of her presence. Here’s why:

In the first 'sode, the wanted us to think there was a Single White Female angle to ByBBQ 8, but the scene on New Caprica from 'sode 4 showed something different: genuine tenderness. Gaeta seemed to be writing out the names of people he has not seen in a while. ByBBQ 8 assures him that if they are captive, she will find them because “the Ones keep really good records”. Gaeta is anxious about the list he created – he is acting as a double agent and trusting someone from the “other side” to help him help the “good side”. He probably should be anxious. ByBBQ 8 squeezes his hand, telling him it wil be OK. He does not recoil.

ByBBQ8 also takes a big risk on New Caprica but she trusts Gaeta and, it would seem, her trust is well placed. Their bond, and the anti-Cylon sentiment that remains in the fleet, may inform her decision to share her plan in secret, etc. Gaeta “gets” this and anyway he is good at being observant, keeping his mouth closed, and executing his plans in secret. And he looks anxious because he is facing a huge problem and the solution involves juggling mixed constituencies with differing agendas and prejudices.

I think ByBBQ8’s plan is to narc everyone up with morpha when they are sleeping (not to kill them, but to slow their respirations), mainline into the FTL drive (where we see someone’s palm being cut in 'sode 1), and help get them somewhere they can be rescued. If anyone else dies, it will be an accident resulting from the scheme, but not homicidal mania.

As for the inconvenience of her presence, it could be a lot of things. First, he is not the guy she knew on New Caprica. He’s adjusting to life as an amputee, addicted to morpha, earf is a wasteland, and he was nearly killed by those he saved. What does it mean that this person from his past, who believed in him so earnestly, has come back into his life? There could be an awkward love triangle if Gaeta had something going on with ByBBQ8 on New Caprica with Hoshi on the scene, but that seems a little schmaltzy for BSG.

Anyway, I’ve got to get back to pretending to work.

Anyone with me? (on the theory, not work)

I’m going to draw fire on this one and call the numbers a red herring…could have been cell blocks on New Cap, where the Sweet 8 could locate them for extradition, could have been a human coding system (of the concentration camp nature), and it could have something to do with a time/date stamp of sorts though the inconsistency in the numeral pattern throws a wrench in that…all in all, I’m sorry to say I think it’s just there to show Gaeta’s uncanny ability to index and recall tomes of data when needed – thus making him exceptionally skilled at his job on the Battlestar. That fact – his near photographic memory – may be a valuable tidbit of info, but I’m thinking that for the sake of giving us something to chew on, the numbers are filler.

Go ahead, fire up the blowtorches, I’m just sayin’

This is just a fun mystery to try to crack open.

Keir, I suspect you’re probably right. RDM having his Star Trek background, is well aware of the tangents the fan base can go off on when presented with minutiae.

I nearly shouted with glee to see that it was Racetrack

I like this theory, though I have no strong opinion if it should turn out this way or not, but I can’t deny it’s appealing.

Leaves a big “hmmmmm” as to how the blood spatter occurs…unless someone is outrageously shaky with the morpha syringe. =)

(Perhaps we could have a series crossover, and let Dexter study the spatter patterns, to determine the nature of the kills, neh?)

A few wild guesses.

First, they could be the password to the lock to the cell doors of the prisoners inside the Cylon prison.

So if they were to mount an rescue, they could bust the dudes out without wasting time trying to blast through every door.

Second guess is that… it could be the NCP’s name and their assigned number, so even though they covered up their faces, they can be identified by their number on the uniform.

I’ll add my guess:

Do you think that the numbers could be addresses? It makes sense that the Cylon would use some type of Cartesian coordinates. After all, they needed to be able to round people up quickly. We also heard that water rationing was according to even and odd blocks. You can imagine that having all of the addresses as Baltar Way, Baltar Street, Baltar Boulevard, etc. would be confusing to the NCP. Gaeta is a navigation officer, so he would be able to remember the addresses of his friends.

What do you think?

So I am guessing the Wolf Chili people aren’t gonna be sponsoring you guys anytime soon.

Dunno, they sponsor rodeos. Podcasting might be the next step.

ok, thinking this has something to do with NC, but why would he be writting these names and Number down now, or do we only see the names and Number in the Past?

I hate it when someone drives a big old truck through a hole in my theory. OK how’s this: Gaeta wakes up next to Susan Pleshette and we find out it was just a horrible dream.

I’m going to crawl back into my cave now.

It looks to be a flashback.

Here is the high res version

If any one can think of a 12th location please let me know I would just like the symmetry of it.

Hows about the outer hull?
