GWC Podcast #131

Great, great 'cast ! The enthusiasm the Crew exudes for the X-Men material is really setting these latest 'casts a step above the norm. Chuck’s clearly enjoying the hell out of learning the full movie/comic stories, Sean’s knowledge of the X-Men history is perfect for these discussions, and there’s lots of superhuman junk for Audra to grab onto and run with. (ouch!) In short, I think Hugh Jackman owes you guys a call-in !

Yup that’s the episode, but the Six Degrees of Scifi doesn’t end there. In that episode the guardian of Kamala, Ambassador Briam, was played by Tim O’Connor who also played Dr. Elias Huer from Buck Rodgers in the 25th Century (boys of a certain age who were fans of Erin Gray will remember). Anyway, Tim O’Connor was also in The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, which also starred (other than OJ Simpson) George Kennedy, best known for his Oscar winning performance in Cool Hand Luke. However, George Kennedy was also in the Japanese thriller Fukkatso no hi, entitled Virus in English. Co-starring in that movie was Edward James Olmos, our beloved Admiral Adama…

She divorced Full House guy and married the fat kid from Stand By Me (who was in Sliders and in some crime drama that was loosely based on CSI).

Who’d-a-thunk that Jerry O’Connell would have been the most successful and have the longest staying power in that group…

RIP River

Kind of off topic, but all this talk of the X-men movies reminded me of this video game at the arcade I used to play way back with xmen and street fighter characters. Were they ever popular? We only played that arcade game incessantly because it was one of the three really old machines (the others being area 51 and bubble bubble) we had, so yeah, as little kids are, we got amazingly good at it.

Well, anyway, I pretty much know very little about X men other than the movies, so wanted to ask about Gambit and what you all think of him. I pretty much know NOTHING about this dude, other than that he throws cards out (in the game) and says “Credit Card!” (well, I’m pretty sure he didn’t say credit card, but whatever he said sounded exactly like credit card, which I thought was hilarious at the time. Anyone know what he ACTUALLY says?) I ask too because I remember reading that the character would be in the Wolverine movies (and played by Taylor Kitsch).

Oh, also, at the end of the game, you get to fight this dude called Apocalypse or something. What’s up with that dude? Was he really all that powerful to be the final bad guy to beat up in the game? And in terms of mythology, do video games count as a source?

Ok, anyway. I didn’t think I’d enjoy this podcast arc much, given my minimal knowledge in X-men comics, but I’m totally loving all this, so thanks!

There were many Capcom games that featured X-men characters. Starting from X-Men vs. Street Fighter, then became a very successful series of games. The earliest x-men console game were made by KONAMI and SEGA tho.

In X-man v.s. Street Fighter, you can use Cyclops, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Juggernaut, Sabretooth, Magneto, and Wolverine.

Capcom later expended the game to become Marvel V.S. Capcom, which eventually have enormous character selection maps with hundreds of characters to choose from.

those were fun games, and thanks them, i got the “yellow spandex” joke.

I loved that game… we had it in the arcade I used to work way back in the day. Yeah, it rocked.

And going back a little further there was a great X-men beat-em-up arcade game with up to 4-player co-op. you could be Dazzler, Colossus, Storm, Nightcrawler and Wolverine… I think that’s it. Twas awesome at the time.

My most hated video game of all time was the x-men game for the original NES shudder

Did anyone play the X-Men game for Sega Genesis. It took me so long to figure out what to do, when in the Mojo level, the screen flashed ‘reset system’ over and over again, I didn’t know what to do! Eventually I figured out that you actually had to hit the reset button on the console, and it would take you into the next level. I loved that game a whole lot.

that must be where Microsoft got its ideas on how to upgrade a computer…

what was with the beeped-out sports metaphor?

The mutant whose powers I would like to have would be Cannonball from the New Mutants/X-Force/X-Men. Cannonball has the ability to fly through the air, at great heights and speeds with considerable maneuverability, he is also nigh-invulnerable whilst he is flying.

But if like Audra said that you had to absorb the character traits and personality of the mutant then it would be Colossus all the way.

Thanks! I couldn’t remember at the time which episode/series it was.

Neat article! Thanks!

Chuck hates it when people use the phrase “game-changer,” so he beeps it out whenever we (often and deliberately) use it.

You may also have noticed that he likes to beep out a certain phrase that rhymes with “good tin chip” but I can’t talk about it any more in public… Chuck might get mad…

Also the “P-word”

For those of you newer to the forum its the P-word that means:

-adjective

  1. last; furthest or farthest; ending a process or series.
  2. maximum; decisive; conclusive.
  3. highest; not subsidiary.
  4. basic; fundamental; representing a limit beyond which further progress, as in investigation or analysis, is impossible.
  5. final; total.
  6. not to be improved upon or surpassed; greatest; unsurpassed.

-noun
7. the final point; final result.
8. a fundamental fact or principle.
9. the best, greatest, or most extreme of its kind.

Thus, my current themed avatar.
(Posted below for when I get a new avatar.)

Great minds, Brendon, etc., etc.

FWIW, I really don’t care about the P-word or the oodenway ipshay. I beeped them because I thought it’d be funny. (Note that especially with the latter I left enough in that you could almost tell what they were. Heh.)

Audra’s right, though. I’m really not a fan of “game changer.” I guess my dislike started when I heard a guy use it to describe something unbelievably unimportant. The fact that it’s also heavily overused probably fans those flames a bit.

I thought it’s the P-word that means:

-noun

  1. Axel F's [strip club buddy](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgG5CnH4uc4).

  2. a [class](http://people.cohums.ohio-state.edu/tennant9/101.html) that strikes fear into the hearts of engineers.

  3. everyone's favorite [Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lieutenants_of_the_Royal_Victorian_Order).

  4. our Cali friend we don't see near often enough.

Oh wait – we don’t beep that one.
