If you want to see Will Smith as a serious actor I would suggest that you check out Six Degrees of Separation.
Oh no, loved every minute of it ! The strayin’s what makes the Watercooler so much Cooler.
Also, The Pursuit of Happyness.
I heard I am Legend… but didn’t watch it. Too close to 28 days later (which I couldn’t handle…)
I look forward to reading this article, but my initial thoughts after listening to the podcast is that, yes, the 90’s did seem particularly progressive with respect to the ethnic/gender roles. However, I’m not sure if I would agree that it reverted back to previous stereotypes in the new millennium. Most sci-fi still seems pretty diverse (such as Enterprise, Firefly, and BSG). I guess the biggest problem is that new sci-fi shows don’t want to be perceived as too derivative, and some powers that be may view having a Black or female commanding officer as simply copying DS9 and Voyager. I guess the problem is that white males are still considered the norm for commanding roles in sci-fi (and American fiction in general).
What I am particularly struck by is that the '00 decade was characterized by multiple examples of minorities or women playing commanding roles in “mainstream” fiction (such as 24 or Commander in Chief). Again an example of the Sci-fi genre leading the way for the mainstream.
Quite ironically until about 2 weeks ago I considered David Palmer from 24 an example of improbable sci-fi.
I saw both of those, didn’t really like either of them. Still want to see Pursuit of Happyness, even if it is spelt incorrectly. I did hear that there was a reason behind that but I can’t remember what it was
Coming soon to theatres everywhere: Christmas Day!
(its a parody trailer I made. check it out)
David, that was Awesome. You rock!!!!
ID4, the only film I have seen that I can’t watch on TV. The only film that looks better on a movie screen than on a TV.
Thread drift - podcast drift it is all good to us. I think we all know that the drift is some of the best fun. Keep up the fantastic podcasts.
Thanks
I saw Pursuit of Happyness awhile ago and really liked it.
Happyness is misspelled because the day care centre that Will Smith’s kid goes to has Happyness written on the window and he bugs the owner because of the spelling mistake.
That was great David ! You really nailed some of the accents !
And you’ve got the “Deep-voiced-trailer-narrator-dude” thing down too ! Kudos !
Alien-possessed Gary Busey liked it too.
Thanks Jeff
I loved hearing Chuck refer to “V” with out saying the name. It really hit the spot. It had some leading Females Juliet Parrish (Faye Grant) Elizabeth (Jennifer Cooke) and the fearful Diana (Jane Badler). Diana gave me nightmares as a kid. Back to strong Females look at Babylon 5. A lot of strong females, and although they never say it directly the XO is Gay for SciFi that’s a first I think. but never gives her a love interest only than the one that lets the viewers know she may be Gay. I sure we could go further, but I think the issue with why there are not more is the same reason people stereotype Geek as white weird looking males that live in their parents basements. We all know is false there are female that live in the basement too…lol.

What I’d like all the producers and writers to take away from all this is: The science fiction community, male, or female, will respond to a female lead, and strong female roles, for just the same reasons we respond to any great character. Interesting character development, good writing, a well-rounded persona that we can believe in. Boobs, or swinging cod, it doesn’t matter !!
The Simpsons actually has an episode, featuring the actual Alan Moore, with Watchmen Babies in it:
If anyone wasn’t around for the previous discussion of Next, BSG’s Anders has a small role early on. And it’s on cable all the time (Starz, I think).
Contact and Armageddon would be nice one-off rewatches. Armageddon’s a big-arse Michael Bay flick that’s more action than sci-fi, but hey…
Thanks guys, and kudos to the GWC crew for coming up with the idea - I couldn’t stop laughing after Chuck said “you know, they should make a sequel, and call it ‘Thanksgiving’. Or ‘Christmas Day’”
The topic to GWC is like Sarah Conner–necessary but not important.
Which is why I am not worried if Cheandra (pronounced chaun-drah) decide to do movies that aren’t SF. Or car reviews. Or just hair-reports.
Oh, and if the sequel to ID is Turkey Day, can we have zombie turkeys?
Oh, and the Junk Report music should be the theme from DS9.
Good idea. The slower early seasons version or the suped-up later seasons one?
I gotta say I laughed more during this podcast than i did almost any other. Not to say that the past podcast have been non funny. But i was in such a good mood listening to this podcast that i got immense enjoyment out of it. Thanks guys for always keeping me entertained.
I think it would depend on the junk about to be reported on.
