GWC Podcast #114

Which may help explain why you have an accent like mine. Ohio is infectious.

The people or the state? Or both?

One more word about The Futurological Congress:

The scene in Matrix 1 where Morpheus offers Neo the two pills, which is like a very central scene that a lot is hinged on in the Matrix trilogy, is most probably inspired by a very very similar scene in the last quarter of Futurological Congress, where Ijon Tichy, the protagonists, gets offered a black pill and a white one by his “girlfriend.” Also, the steak scene has an almost exact counterpart in Futurological Congress, which was written thirty years before Matrix.

Another book from which Matrix took a lot of ideas is Neuromancer.

You know I think that creative “ether” or what it’s called could be real.

Well it is the basic generic English that most of the middle states speak. The newscasters and radio professionals also often use it since it has no specific regional dialect. If you talk like someone from New York or New Jersey you can definitely tell where they are from. I was just joking that you do not have any German or New Jersey accent.

Hm. Having dated a girl from TN once, I can do a very poor Southern accent if I have to, but you don’t wanna hear it.

Another great 'cast GWC. Again, really fun to listen to. Totally agree that the rave scene is the best argument to stay out the Matrix for the reasons you gave. It’s a chance to experience real humanity.

However, I’ve never been the greatest fan of the kissing scene, although the rubber dress is awesome (just always has seemed pointless). And the “Merovingian section” has some of the best dialogue ever as well as one of the best fight scenes ever.

I’m just off to watch Revolutions now and I am looking forward to it very much. I might try and email in a call today as I’m going away tomorrow and so won’t be able to access the internet. :frowning:

The first two Matrix movies have been on cable for weeks. Why would the thrid movie not be shown?

I hate to not be prepared for next week. :frowning:

OMG! That is so “teacher”!

:o

Right… I’m gonna go look in the mirror for a while…

I still wonder why the first 2 movies are on over and over but the 3rd has not been on once. I really can not even remember the 3rd movie much.

Isn’t that funny! A very good family friend of ours taught at Ohio State- Detmar Meurers. The hub’s family was his host family back in the day, and did the same for his brother, Jens.

I have to say, your accent is barely discernible!

(I am so tempted to say, “Do you know him?” lol! As though you know absolutely everyone from Germany- or Jersey!)

Geez, GR. You could have at least put on a bad German accent if you’re going to continue this charade.

Star Wars and the Matrix are just different. Very different.

What might make people think the movie has no point? A lot of the time it feels all action all the time, I loved the action. But the meaning isn’t so obvious a lot of the time - I blame the sound mixing, it’s really easy to miss dialogue. But even with that, I found that it was really easy to get distracted. But again, that might go back to (as I noted in the 2 person frak party) being deafened by the music, and unable to make out the dialogue without the subtitles on.

Audra makes a good point about the audience and the willing suspense of disbelief - I find myself struggling to suspend my disbelief in this film, and I’m not quite sure why. It’s not that I dislike the Matrix or the ideas behind the matrix, but there’s something that keeps me from buying into it completely.

Morpheus’ speech - Lacking in rhetorical skill! Yes!!! (sorry Chuck). It just doesn’t convince.

The rave in and of itself isn’t gratuitous - but I definitely think that the gaze towards women’s bodies was. (and feet?). But I think the religious structure is spot on. I don’t want to say that Matrix Rave = Christianity, but in Christian religious services I’m familiar with, there is the first part of the service, which is the Word (read: speeches) and then there’s the Eucharist, which actually is another word for celebration. So in terms of the world of the Matrix, it makes sense that you have speeches and celebration as a form of religious devotion.

It’s also interesting for me to see how the different “programs” are named - and the people too. With names like The Oracle, The Architect, etc, it makes me think of parables, and of fables. I also think it’s interesting that the humans who have been freed all choose their own names (though I don’t know if that is also true for the humans who are born rather than grown) - particularly because there’s a lot of work that has been done about the power relationships involved in the act of naming.

GR. your voice sounds absolutely nothing like what I was expecting. But The Futurological Congress sounds like an interesting book.

Reactions to the Audra Hair Report: I agree on liking the Neo-short-hair - the longer hair is definitely dated. And floppy. I do have to disagree though I don’t like the slicked down Trinity look, it just doesn’t look right - there’s nothing wrong with shiny or ripples, but it’s lacquered down too much like a helmet for my taste. Though I must ask - how can they all have such fabulous hair in the “real world” conditions? Where do all the hair ties come from?

The Matrix may not be a subtitle-y language, but I sure need them to understand the dialogue… harumph.

Just to clarify…when I finally saw The Matrix in the theater it was at a local dollar theater. Sixth Sense & Fight Club were in the first run theaters at the time.

For the record, OSU is in Columbus which is in the middle of the state. Cinci is at the southern tip just before entering Kentucky. Ohio is an interminably long state to drive through (and i-75 is BORING) anyway…they really aren’t close in proximity at all except for being in the same state.

Also wanted to add…the ankle bracelet is actually one of those anklets that belly dancers wear with the little jingly bells on it.

Yes, but it’s personal fun to me to “assume” that if you have spent 5 minutes in one tiny corner of a state/country, you should know everyone else from it! lol!

I’m a bit delirious and silly with denial about my summer coming to an end… sigh.

It’s like I want to binge on what I didn’t get to do for fun this summer 'cause it sped by so quickly. I know that sounds dumb. But true.

I want jingly bells on my ankle!

This was actually my favorite podcast yet. I am not a Reloaded hater—actually I love it—but y’all defiantly gave me more food for thought. Great job. I am looking forward to what Sean has to say about Revolutions and the Trainman.

Without remembering this…

Hm, yeah when I said Cincinnati area, I actually meant the tip of Northern Kentucky…

I have to say, your accent is barely discernible!

Thanks, that means a lot, I mean, a lot of time and practice went into that.

Maybe I could phone in an intro sometime with a really thick accent?

Whoa… GalaxyRangerFromOhio!

War Journal:
Week 5, maybe 4, without car stereo and, hence, no GWC. Really hard starting the day in silence. I can almost hear the GWC music if I think about it. It’s rough. When everyone says “IYKWIM,” I really feel like I don’t. I wanna go back in the Matrix.
