Yah, that’s how I remember Trekkie being used by the masses.
My friend brought his communicator model and “The Making Of The Trouble With Tribbles” book into high school and was pejoratively called a Trekkie, as if he was some kind of ill-fitting-costume wearing super-fanboy.
About that time, he started to refer to himself as a serious Trekker, apparently in part to counter the mockery.
Unfortunately for him, the other students didn’t acknowledge any difference between the two.
Thanks for addressing the Trekkie Trekker question.
So my understanding is this…
Trekkie=Fans who enjoy the shows/movie/books/comics and are well versed in the universe.
Trekkers=The obsessed fan who lives breaths and eats the universe. Going as far as dressing up everyday as characters, talking like characters, and even naming their kid Spock.
Heh, we have folks like that in Star Wars fandom. A few fans have even gone as far as creating a Jedi religion with a church and everything.
Uh, there aren’t any “dish police”, are there? Uh, 'cause I’ve got 'em. :o
I’ve never really labeled myself- I was just a very devoted fan of the OS. TNG came during the party years, and I never made the time for the rest.
I have the cloth and the pattern for my own Uhura outfit, but I was waiting for my butt to get to a manageable size (It’s been at least 10 years). lol! I guess one day, I’ll just bite that bullet and make it anyway! I always get more cloth than I need!
If I had to choose, Trekkie would be it for me. It sounds more lighthearted and fun, regardless of the connotation. I define myself. IMHO, those who take themselves way too seriously can go fly.
As one familiar with riding the high horse, I keep peeps around me to knock me off it regularly. They do it with glee. I am so lucky!
You can’t fun with others if you can’t be funned with yourself!
Listening late this week… Credit where it’s due… I didn’t come up with “Earf”… According to my half-arsed and brief research, Default Prophet did. Which was covered already on like page 2… But you see what I’m sayin’…
It was in the air. “Erfworld” has been around for a while now. (A very cool webcomic and worth following.)
Which brings up an interesting point. Our culture, and laws, are oriented around an idea of “originality.” All well and good, but if you’re a creative type, you realize that you owe a huge debt to those who came before you, and all but the most self-absorbed acknowledge the fact. Where it gets interesting is when, say, a blue musician who made his career on the back of prison work songs recorded by the WPA bitches about some techno guy sampling “his” work.
but we kinda are, don’tcha think? how many have we corrupted? how many now reside in the gutter thanks to our (and by our, I mean GR’s) influence? social responsibility–it’s more than just a quaint idea.
sorry, i snagged myself a delicious breakfast sandwich from the corner deli before work this morning. no jimmy dean for me. we’re talking 100% Trenton Roll.
and thanks for the welcome. i’ve been meaning to check this forum out for awhile, having been a fan of GWC for almost as long as i’ve been a fan of BSG. it’s exactly how i expected it would be, and i mean that in a good way.
In GR’s defense we do tend to enjoy setting him up. He then can not help himself. I type and think oh what will GR and the other guys do with that. Shame on me. I will try to be more socially responsible.
Audra, can’t agree with you on one of the most important issues on BSG - Lee’s hair. Bring back the short hair!!! I was with you when you didn’t like the new long hair but now you’ve turned on me.
ETA: Without GWC, facing down this mid-season “hiatus” would be just about unbearable. Big thanks to the three for keeping us going.
Mad Max flicks* are the best. Mad Max might be one of the scariest movies ever… there’s nothing unrealistic about it. It’s disturbing. If some kind of doomsday scenario ever goes down, in about a year (give or take), we’re all living in Mad Max world.
I’ve watched Road Warrior a million times since I was kid, but Mad Max, man, it’s creeeeeepy. In a great way.
Does Sean have a call sign yet? How about “Humungus” (they mispelled it in the movie, which is a nice touch), “Max,” or “Papagallo”?
