I always thought that Trekkers were Trekkies who take themselves way too seriously.
Y’know, before the Cally-killin, Cylon baseship livin’, crazy smilin’, “perfect” thinkin’, hair pluckin’ Gangsta Tori, we’ve all come to know and lust after (ok, maybe that’s just Sean and me and few others) - if I remember correctly Head Baltar tells baltar that she is “fragile”. Then she cries during the Baltar sex.
Is it possible she was REALLY fragile and it was the Baltar lovin’ that finally just snapped what was left of her that was moral? That she knew no one else would want her if she was discovered? So she just just said “Frak it” and deceived to snap and REALLY embrace her cylon-ness?
“Trekker” was the response to the increasingly pejorative connotation associated with “Trekkie” (which may have been at its height at the time of the infamous “Get a Life” SNL sketch). “Trekker” came to connote the “serious” fan, but these days I would imagine RMHPH is right about its use among those who take themselves too seriously. Someone here on the boards used to have a similar quote in their sig, but I can’t remember who.
All I know is that Trekkie is considered the more appropriate word and Trekker is for people who are wannabe geeks. I read that somewhere, probably in Shatner’s biographies.
My best friend mentioned my Star Trek fandom in his best man speech at my wedding, and he wrapped it up with “Live Long and Prosper”. But I don’t think he used to the term “Trekkie”. I wouldn’t have minded if he had though.
See and I always thought and I could have sworn that Trekkie was for the more serious fan (in terms of devotion) and Trekker was for folks who just more or less pretended to like Trek because it was hip at the time.
Not to mention the Trekettes - long famous for their chorus line dancing at Radio City Music Hall in NYC - before it was nuked that is.
I didn’t mind being called a Trekkie. And the Trekker thing was a stupid, defensive term. I mean, if you’re proud of being a Trekkie, why do you need a new name?
But eventually when friends called me a Trekkie, I would say "No no, I’m not a Trekkie. I’m “Trekspert” because I know everything about Star Trek. I really do. Try me. I promise not to Google or Wiki.
New fun with Erf:
Trekker is indeed what people call themselves when they don’t know they should be called a Trekkie.
Used to have something similar to that in my sig.
However, like many incorrect things in society it has taken hold and will never be able to be corrected at this time.
I grew up on TNG, would consider myself a Trekkie. Even though supposedly Trekker came about with TNG. Newbs.
Here ya go. If this is real, then a definitive answer. LINK
As I remember it Trekkie was the first term then came Trekker. The Trekkies enjoyed the show and were good fans. The Trekkers would be like GWC. Trekkers were more into the details and thought about the show more deeply.
What?? It can be a good thing…if it’s with pride

pretty frakin’ sweet indeed!!
I always thought Trekkers were like the super intense “I know the floor plan to all the Enterprises” types
I just wanted to say I LOVE GWC. It’s been over a hundred episodes and this is the only podcast where within the first few minutes i’m smiling, and over the next hour or two my coworkers are looking at me strangely as I desperately try to keep the snickers to a managable level. Kudos on a wonderful podcast. Thank you for entertaining me these many hours, especially considering you do this consistantly because you guys want to, and not because you are making any money doing it. Keep up the great work Sean Chuck and Audra.
Umm …(cough)…I know the floor plan to all the Enterprise types. Okay, okay, I’m exaggerating. I have the complete deck plans to NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-D. So, yeah, I suppose I’m not a true Trekker. :D:D
Early word on the 4.0 DVD is late this year, per the below

My understanding was always the opposite. Trekkies were the floor plan, Vulcan ear wearing, “Let’s make our own episode” filming, Tribble model building, “beam me up” quoting type.
Trekkers were those who liked and appreciated Star Trek but didn’t get the chess set or commemorative dish.
“It’s really Earth, they just landed in New Jersey.”
i’m still laughing at that. i almost choked on my pork roll, egg, and cheese when i heard it.
First off…welcome to the forum! Second off…pork…egg…cheese…are you eating something made by the Jimmy Dean company by chance? Blueberry Cheese Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick?
Trekkie was the original term. I don’t know if Roddenberry coined it, but he certainly used it.
Trekker came about in the seventies. It was coined by fans who thought “Trekkie” was diminutive. “Trekker” was supposed to imply action, so it was really a bit of self-actualization in the fan community.
Nowadays, anyone who calls themself a Trekker is probably an older, die-hard fan.
