GWC has ruined the internet

I find the internet is no longer a safe place for me. I tried joining a doctor who forum and was astonished at the venom some people had towards others. I found myself asking “Why are you treating this person so badly? We should be acting like friends and you’re treating him like some random stranger on the interne- oh. damn.”

So I now find myself scared to go beyond the safety of the playground that is the GWC forum. I’ve become an internet mommas boy. Thanks guys.

That’s it, scopehound, come back into the light. You’re amongst friends here.

Gaf

The only sites I visit on the interwebs is GWC and p0rn. Not necessarily in the order.

It would be pretty sweet, though, if we could get some actual GWC porn.

Dude. What do you mean “in that order”? Haven’t you ever heard of multiple browsers Windows? Get with it, Fred Flintstone

I’d like this post but I can’t find the “like” button anywhere. Talk about breaking the internet!

We don’t need no frakkin’ “like” button!

I know what y’all mean. I joined a Disney forum and experienced the same thing- you would think Disney fans would be happy and nice to one another, right?

There are some mean people out there in Internet land. It astounds me the way some people talk to one another online. Thank God GWC is different.

See, This is what I’m talking about. 22 hours since I originally posted this, 7 replies, and not a single one of them a “get over it,” “stop yer bitchin’,” or “n00b” style comment. You have proven my point as only GWCers could.

sniff

I frakkin love you guys!! Hugs and high fives will be given as requested at the meetup.

I don’t know. If you scroll up you’ll note that I criticized frakkintalos and I called him a mean name.
That seems kinda trollish, yes?

Yeah, and then there was the time we virtually stole your snowblowerwhile you were on vacation, Thot.

Stay away from us Scopehound! We’re a rotten, rotten bunch!

As many of you know I came to GWC a dyed in the wool Syfy forum person. I was never a troll, but being in that environment changes you, makes you cruel and mean. I remember distinctly listening to one of the first podcasts where the Crue spoke positively of Anders. “BLANDERS?!?!?” I thought to myself who the Syfy forum openely reviled. The thing was I always liked Anders but over time came to dislike him given that caustic environment.

Needless to say I went cold turkey. I made some friends over there some of which have made the jump with me. I occasionally check in and come away reshocked at how bad it is. Here are some graphics I personally put together for use in those forums…you can see what that environment breeds.

Thank you GWC.

Not only are they polite & cool, but GWCers also are the kind of people who have better things to do, which is one more thing that makes them such good company.

In fact, now that you mention it, not only is “noob” NOT part of the specialized GWC lingo/lexicon, but I’ve definitely never seen it used with its usual perjorative connotations.

“GWC: Less n00b, more b00b.”

I flat out love the intelligent creativity of GWCers even though I have none whatsoever that I am aware of. Thank you to everyone for sharing your creativity with me. I am a better person for being around you.

That’s a great point, too. It really conditions people and socializes them to act that way. It hasn’t happened for awhile, but some of you OGs will remember: Every now and then, someone would come stumbling onto the boards, thinking the best way to start a conversation was to write an eight-paragraph rant about the hosts/GWC Crue. And once someone explained to them — always concisely and as nicely as possible — that We Don’t Do That Here, I can’t recall any of them sticking around long enough to sustain the attack.

Knock on wood.

Huh, I said ‘wood.’

Actually, some of them stuck around and are frequent contributors now. (You know who you are.)

<whistles to himself>

I’m still pretty green to the site, but on this topic I find GWC very old school internet. Maybe my usage was very different back in the early 90s, but back then the communities I took part in were very much about the good, rather than the bad. I remember when someone would sign up for a forum and ask a basic, already answered by the FAQ, question the first post would at least be a link to the FAQ section that answered the question, and more often then not, welcome the person and restate the answer. Now, at best, it seems you get a, “STFU N00B!” and at worst, just a straight ban.

When I first jumped into the forums here, I’ll admit there was a feeling of intimidation. Everyone here seems really tight knit and part of the community. “How can I just bust in on this party these people are having?” was what I was feeling. It was almost conditioned into me after decades of being on the internet that I wouldn’t just be allowed into this social circle without having to fight my way in, and no matter how fun it looked from the outside, I just wasn’t willing to go through the whole process again only to find out it was just like every other online community. The experience has been the exact opposite of any expectation, or any other time I had joined an online community.

He he. you said wood and boob.

Yeah, I definitely appreciate the environs here. You can say stuff like “I liked Johnny Mnemonic” and not have to suffer through two pages of people questioning everything from your sexuality to your ancestry.

This place has more of a family feel than others, and it’s cool.
