Here’s our GWC Book Club TalkCast on Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy in its entirety. (Originally recorded live January 3, 2009.) The Book Club TalkCast is a monthly event. If you’d like to participate, check out the book club discussion and book selection threads on the forum, and look for another TalkCast next month discussing Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot.
How long does it take for a new feed to be promulgated on iTunes? (I.e., when is the new DTA feed going to show up?)
Ask Apple. Oh wait – no support of any kind for podcasters! So your guess is as good as mine.
I am still having a problem finding the feed for the Direct to Archive cast. Is anyone else having trouble? The DTA iTunes link on the blog goes to a the main cast feed which only has up to cast #128. Looks like there are two main cast feeds, but only one is still being updated.
Just FYI, I posted a thread specifically to address the DTA iTunes issue:
Ok Thanks, I didn’t see it. Hopefully it will get worked out soon.
I actually played the infocom text game of Hitchhiker before reading the book and was so amazed by the game, I ended up picking it up soon after. So began a lifelong love of all things Douglas Adams. He has a way of turning language sideways in hilarious and incredibly witty ways.
Chuck mentioned that DA is one of the people he wished he could have met. Since his death, I’ve often lamented the fact he never saw the iPod and it’s amazing evolution to the iPhone - he was a huge fan of gadgetry, Apple in particular.
Also, someone on the call mentioned they didn’t know the man as well as his work,. The Salmon of Doubt is a great way to get closer to him - by the end you really feel like you know him.
He’s so missed and it’s tough to accept we’ll never read something new from that amazing mind.
Favorite Quote (from RATEOTU): “It has been said that Vogons are not above a little bribery and corruption in the same way that the sea is not above the clouds.”
Wow. I am so glad I did it the other way 'round.
That game was great! It even came with Peril-sensitive sunglasses. If you like the classic infocom games, this one is worth checking out. DA oversaw it’s production and wrote it so it’s top notch.
Oh yeah, and a piece of fluff.
Which was a frakin’ smack to the back of my head that I never understood.
Man, that game defined “Love/Hate” for me.
i foudn it really engrossing. it was the first one of the kind i played. I went on to Leather Goddesesses, Zork, etc after. Every once in a while i’ll play one on my iPhone (or did before i lost it last week
Why Love/hate?
If you read the books first, you kept thinking you knew what was going on, but didn’t really.
ETA: What were you using to do Infocom on the Iphone?
It’s called Frotz. it’s great (minus the usual frustration of iPhone typing)
So you mention in the cast that its worth checking out the radio drama if you have read the book. Do you think its worth reading the book if you have only hear the radio drama? (and seen the movie)
Oh, Craap. I completely missed the chat. At least, now I get to listen. Thanks in advance.
And I’m on my way to getting a copy of The Salmon of Doubt AND Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, having been listening to the radio show for the past week or two (I’m still not finished! I’m on the fifth ‘book’ right now). DA overdose, but it makes me happy.
ZORK! Man, it’s been a while since that crossed my mind.
RE: The podcast: Huh, Thotfullguy said “wang.”
I actually used to work for Wang for a short time while I was still in college.
Their leading product was a thing called the “Professional Computer” or PC for short. A computer that could fit right on your desktop.
It was a fine idea, except for the fact that around that same time IBM had just rolled out it’s “Personal Computer” or PC for short.
Wang was doomed.
It’s better than that! He actually said:
“Wang.”
You haven’t lived till you’ve driven a bunch of kids past a large office building with that shiny steeled moniker!! Good for a chuckle.
I never worked in the big tall Wang towers in Lowell, only the long flat Wang building in Tewskbury.
