I’ve been in hotels that were NOT happy to have us affixing anything to the doors, so keep that in mind. It would be fun, but would potentially piss of hotel mgmt.
blinks innocently Can’t you reschedule? ducks
It’s beyond my control, unfortunately. My wife works part time and never has to travel for her job. But they’ve asked her to make this one trip, and, as luck would have it, it’s exactly that same time as the Texas Meetup. Someone’s gotta stay home with the youngins, and that would be me.
El Bummero.
Tell you what–drop your girls off with my husband and mother-in-law. They can have fun with my son and daughter. You can attend the meet-up. Win, win, win.
You will be greatly missed. I was really looking forward to the opportunity to meet you.
I had a new thought about this…we could make something to hang from the door knobs. We could take a scarf or a necktie or something similar and make placards with our names on it. No damage to the door, BUT easy to remove. That’s the drawback. It’s a thought.
Now that, is a Plan!! My girls would be totally smitten with your son within the first minute.
Back at ya. I feel the same way.
I booked a room for myself, Dawn and Raemani. Woot! I haven’t heard from Dawn or Raemani all day. I know Dawn was doing Phoenix ComiCon this weekend. I don’t know if Raemani is there or not. In any case, we’re booked and I’m excited!!! Yay!
I had to bite my tongue when the guy doing my ressies told me he was a Cowboys fan. We’re not so kind to Cowboys fans in my household. It’s the 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Tolerate Cowboys Fans.
i totally agree with this statment
i love it… im gonna count how many times people say, “ill be in my bunk”
i want a lil door placard(spelling)
Keara- I sure hope you requested a room with a viper view when you booked our reservations today!
I’m willing to share a room with another lady smoker. I’ll wait to book until early next week, just in case.
Assuming that the viewing and live podcast will be pantless…I need to plan out my packing. And start tanning!
UPDATE: As of March 16th we’ve reached capacity for this event. If you haven’t already received positive confirmation from me of your RSVP, I’m sorry – we’re full.
As part of the 1st Annual Nat’l Meetup we’re holding a group watch of (what we hope will be) the Battlestar Galactica season finale on March 20, 2009. If you’re planning to attend, please read carefully – and check back as we update this when we know more about the finale broadcast schedule:
What
We’re set up to watch the BSG premiere in real time on a large (read >100") screen. Immediately following the premiere we’re going to record a GWC podcast in the same room with the live audience participating.
Where
The event will be held in the banquet room of the official meetup hotel:
Hilton Homewood Suites
3240 Parkwood Blvd.
Frisco, TX 75034
(214) 618-0111
When
We obviously don’t know what time the finale will broadcast, so check back here for time updates.
(That said, we imagine that we’ll open the doors about 30 minutes prior to the premiere start.)
Attire
This event is casual, and costumes are allowed and encouraged. We do ask that you not bring prop/inert weapons as they might scare the hell out of the hotel staff.
How
We have limited seating for this event. We don’t imagine we’re going to run into any problems with too many people in attendance, but because of this fact we’re treating this as an invitation/RSVP event.
Getting an “invitation” is easy. PM me with the following information:
[ul]
[li]Your real name.[/li][li]How many people are in your party. (Please limit your party to no more than four unless we know you and the people in your party.)[/li][li]An email/phone we we can reach you in case we run into any problems.[/li][li]If you’re coming in from out of town, please note this fact.[/li][li]If you’re staying at the hotel for the meetup (and you should if you’re coming from out of town), please note this fact.[/li][/ul]
I’ll put you on the official door list and reply to you with an RSVP confirmation. There is no charge for attending the event.
(I’ll update this with a contact email shortly. We’re making some changes to the GWC email system, which means it’s fsked tonight.)
What if the BSG finale gets moved to another night?
Obviously this could happen. If it does, we’ll watch something else. Regardless, we think it’ll be a lot of fun.
What about the podcast?
We’ll have equipment set up in the room to allow us to record our standard Friday-night podcast (for release Saturday) immediately after the finale. You’ll be able to see and participate in the whole process.
We’re working on the possibility of streaming this podcast live for GWCers who can’t make it to the meetup, but this is far from a sure thing at this point. But either way, we’ll definitely record a podcast.
Notes
Not that we think it’s going to be a problem, but if for some crazy reason we run short of seating we’ll give precedence to a) people who are staying in the hotel, b) people who are attending all meetup events, and c) long time GWCers. Personally I think we’re going to have more than enough room.
If for some reason you find out you can’t come, please let us know. If we run tight it could mean the difference between someone being able to attend or not. Even if we have plenty of space it’ll help us plan ahead.
What/Why
We’re hoping to maximize the time that everyone can hang out and get to know each other at the meetup, so we’ve scheduled a dinner for Saturday night at our favorite local Italian restaurant.
When
Saturday Night, March 21, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. (CT)
We’ll finish when we finish, but I’d imagine we’ll likely be at the restaurant until at least around 9:30.
Where
Sweet Basil
17610 Midway Road (at Trinity Mills)
Dallas, TX 75287
Attire
One of the reasons we love this restaurant so much is that it’s very casual. Jeans and a T-shirt are no problem, but dressing up is fun, too. The bottom line: whichever way you choose to go you won’t feel out of place. (Costumes, however, would likely be out of place here.)
Menu
We’ve arranged for a prix fixe four-course dinner as follows:
Hot Antipasto
Combination of fried zucchini, stuffed mushrooms with crab meat, and fried mozzarella cheese
Salad
Caesar Salad or Mixed Green Salad
Entreé (choose one)
Chicken Sweet Basil
Grilled chicken breast, mushrooms, and cream sauce.
Veal Marsala
Veal slices, mushrooms, and marsala wine sauce.
Salmon Del Chef
Grilled fresh salmon, lemon butter sauce, and capers.
Dessert
Cheesecake or Tiramisu
Price/Payment
The meal is $30. Wine and non-alcoholic drinks are available as well, and each diner will pay their bill separately at the end of the night. The restaurant accepts cash and credit (Visa/MC/Amex). Please note that the restaurant will likely add a reasonable gratuity based on the size of our party.
How
Seating is limited at this event as well, though like before we don’t imagine it’s going to be an issue. Regardless, we’re treating this as an invitation/RSVP event.
If you’d like to attend, PM me with the following information:
[ul]
[li]Your real name.[/li][li]How many people are in your party. (Please limit your party to no more than two unless we know the people in your party. If you need an exception to this, we probably know you. :))[/li][li]An email/phone where we can reach you in case we run into any problems.[/li][li]If you’re coming from out of town, please note this fact.[/li][li]If you’re attending the entire meetup (staying at the hotel and/or attending the Friday night group-watch and Saturday’s other activities), please note this fact.[/li][/ul]
I’ll reply to you with an RSVP confirmation that we have a seat for you at dinner.
What if I require a vegetarian option?
If you are for sure planning to attend the event, we can make arrangements for this. Please let us know. There may be additional/different cost. Please don’t ask for this option unless you really need it (in which case we understand).
Notes
The people that own and operate this restaurant are very good friends of ours, which is how we managed to even set up dinner when we have no idea how many people are coming. (Most places would stick it to us or turn us away.) To put it in perspective, Audra and I had our second date there nine years ago. They’re nice people, and I think you’ll enjoy meeting them. (And not that I imagine you’d consider it, but if you were mean to them I’d take it personally.)
I don’t know what the added gratuity will be, but I can tell you that I generally tip far more than standard rates at this restaurant because they’re so kind and attentive. So my bet is that if they add 15% or something you might even want to drop a little more. You’ll just have to see how you feel afterward and decide for yourselves.
I’ve actually tried all the menu items and found them to be quite good. (My favorite of the three is the salmon, but YMMV.)
Wine, should you choose to indulge, ranges from $25 to around $50 a bottle. They have quite a selection in that range.
Important: The restaurant is a good ways away from the hotel. You’ll need a car (or a ride with someone who has a car) to get there. No van or bus transportation is provided, so if you’re not either local or planning to rent a car, please be sure to get with our official travel coordinator Raemani to work out any travel details.
Woo Hoo! Booked and Stoked!!
I am going to have two other people with me - and we got the two queen beds - we’d be willing to bring an air mattress if you want to stay in our room.
