"Guards, Guards!" by Terry Pratchett

In light of Terry’s unfortunate diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimers, I thought it would be appropriate to nominate one of his many Discworld books.

Picking which one was tough, because there are many different threads that surface periodically in this sprawling satirical series. After some discussion, “Guards, Guards!” seems to be the choice for best introduction for new readers.

I think I mentioned “Guards, Guards!” in another thread, but I would like to second this nomination. This was the book that got me to start reading Terry’s works, and I have read everything he has done since then. From this book, you can go backward and forward through the series with a great grip the world and Terry’s writing style.

I agree! Guards, Guards is a great gateway-book for Prachett, and if you like these characters, there are many more books where they grow and develop.

I would like to concur with my wise fellow GWCer’s, “Guards, Guards!” would be a great selection, not to mention a chance to reread a book that I would include in a list of things to save if my house were burning down.
