GATEWAY by Frederik Pohl

So … I just finished this book a couple of days ago, it’d been on my reading list for some time (right in between Tales of the Batman by Tim Sale and The Soldier From Tomorrow by Harlan Ellison) and I really liked it and am wondering if anybody else here has already read it.

The shrink computer, in particular, was hilarious, the re-curring theme about luck was nice, and, well, just the whole premise of them finding this ancient alien technology that they could operate to a certain degree but just had no clue what it all actually meant was really thought-provoking. As I understand it, a Clarke novel about Rama might be similar, I haven’t checked that out yet.

Yes, I read this one many years ago. You should definately get the sequel, Beyond the Blue Event Horizon, and check it out. New characters, but you also revisit Robinette, and the Heechee, and…Albert Einstein, (sort of).

Can you imagine jumping into an alien spacecraft and heading off to wherever it’s programmed ? Tough way to make a living !! Especially when you might never come back.

I haven’t read the book you are referring to, but I wanted to throw out an endorsement for Rendezvous with Rama. I read it as a teenager and loved it. I don’t remember much about the sequels though.

oh yeah, I mean, would you do it? would I? would anyone?
