Garden Of Eden-No Exit spoilers

Ok, I’ll throw a tomato…

One can enjoy BSG without a hint of religious reference. Or other literary works or current events.

IMHO, you don’t need to bend it until it fits.

But, since you enjoy it that way, proceed.

(Maybe I’m just embarrassed not to have read Paradise Lost. Now that’s shameful.)

I completely agree. Really, what is being revealed is that there are no new stories. And the oldest, biggest theme stories tend to have their roots in religion (no surprise there). However, there are new ways of telling the old stories and ways to nuance them as well - and these BSG folks excel at that.

Here you go.

Put him in spandex and he’s a cylon Richard Simmons. “Hey everybody! Come on in and enjoy the party! Wheeeee!!!”

Actually, I think it’s more The Book of Mormon in space. At least the original concept was: http://www.michaellorenzen.com/galactica.html

Anyway, no, of course you’re not wrong (“you’re not WRONG, Dude…”) in your assertion. The echoes of judeo-christian mythology are everywhere around the mythos of BSG, but you should be careful to read it too much as a 1:1 correlation. That’s all.

(Also, you really should be careful of telescoping later scripture back to earlier text. If the Genesis writer–and I forget which writer it is that writes the temptation story, A or Y–meant for you to equate the Serpent with Satan–which merely means adversary and did not take on the nature of an actual literary character until much, much later in the tradition–he would’ve written “Satan.” The Bible’s not ONE single book but a collection of books written over several centuries. Christians and post-Christians like us tend to forget this too easily, IMO.)

And then there’s Norse mythology - starting with the loss of the right eye by Tigh, and all the related Odin/Wotan themes, including the fall of the gods and the rise of humans.

Does that make Starbuck Brunhilde and the rest of the pilots Valkyries? Yo-to-ho!

You mean, this guy?

Is THIS the face of Daniel/no. 7?

Next to that, Twiki looks like a raging steel testosterbot. Nothing says “Death to Humans” like backlit purple lips. Except lame’ which I note is also present. If Aquaman became an evil cyborg, the result would be very similar to this guy.

Himee from Buck Rogers all grown up!

Mebbe. What if at the end, she sacrifices herself so men can rise and prevail? Boy, then we’ll be bummed out.

He shows up here every few months or so. With a lot more attitude than Richard Simmons.

That’s my feeling exactly. The show pulls on so many things for material that you never know exactly where they’re going to go. We know Larson came up with Kobol from “Kolob” in Mormonism, then there’s the Greco-Roman stuff, Islam, Judaism, Christianity, the list goes on. And it seems they’re never going to let us pin it down completely to one familiar myth, which is a good thing.

I haven’t read “Paradise Lost” since I was in high school twenty years ago!! (do not laugh)
So, I will have to take OT’s word on the similarities with that.

Lucifer was just one of that model. There was at least one more mentioned by name. There were scenes from TOS of several of the “Il” models running around.

First there were the B9’s and they were good.

Then came the Centurions. They rebelled.

Now the Cylons are reborn what will they become.

The progression is a lil spooky.

If she throws herself into Lee’s funeral pyre, then yeah…

If you’re referring to “documentaty hypothesis”, it’s “J” for “Jahwist”, “E” for “Elohist”, “D” for “Deuteronomist”, and “P” for “Priestly source”.

And I understand your point… painfully, because I too am frustrated by the many inconsistencies in the Bible. One which really knaws on my brain is why Adam and Eve are considered the first man and woman (GEN 3:20), yet a later chapter states:

“This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.” (GEN 5:1-2)

Note, their name was not “Adam and Eve”, just “Adam”. And if Adam was a race of men and women… what exactly does Eve symbolize? Neanderthals? Another extinct race? Who knows. But this scripture is clear that at least the Book of Genesis (or, one of the Books the redactor used to compile Genesis) was concerned only with the race of Adam.

So confusing!

Btw, “Satan”, “Shetan”, etc are roughly translated as “enemy”. The Serpent was cursed to be Adam’s enemy for all eternity… thus, whenever the character “Satan” appears to be thwarting the efforts of men people naturally assume it’s the same Serpent.

Btw 2.0, there is a class of angels in the Bible called “Seraphim”; the etymology of the word is derrived from “serpent”.

Btw 2.1, when the Israelites were attacked by “fiery serpents” during the Exodus, Moses made a bronze staff with a bronze snake coiled around it… those suffering from snake venom were healed by just looking at the snake. Later, the Israelites worshipped the staff and called it “Nehushtan”; the etymology of this word is related to the Sanscrit, “Nehu”, or “Naga”…

Btw 2.2, according to ancient Chinese mythology, mankind was created by two beings named “Nuwa” (female) and “Fuxi” (male). They are depicted as human from the waste up, serpent from the waste down… she holds the compass, he hold the square… and they are surrounded by star constellations… the only constellation Archeaologists and Astronomers can recognize is the big dipper.

OT - apt to compare it to Paradise Lost, as Anders was going all Milton on us for a bit there…

He was kinda wasn’t he…

The creators of BSG are spinning a very complex kaleidoscope (I can’t believe I spelled that right the first time… thank you Mrs. Opel from 4th grade!) in front of us. Put all of these bits and pieces in together to see what new and interesting forms they create and what thoughts they provoke.

The early shows were masterful at doing this with the reactions to enemies, terrorism 9/11 etc. This later stage has been much more of the mythological / religious and seems to me to be taking a pretty hard turn for the philiosophical - free will, self determination.

None of these are meant to be taken too far and they do well to avoid giving absolute answers (grey must be RDM’s favourite colour) other than to the most basic of questions genocide bad, freedom good, one should respect religious differences. Trying to figure out which elements come from which sources is a delicious added layer of interest.

The information dump aspect of the last episode was a bit heavy handed, but what cheers me up is that it must mean that there is lots of content left to get out before the finale.

I’m looking forward to these last five spins of the wheel of that kaleidoscope.

All star athlete, freedom fighter, Viper pilot, essentially immortal, epic poet and all around good guy - he can do it all.

I did not know that a photograph of Milton existed. I love this place.

cue Guns ‘n’ Roses’ song Garden of Eden… i’m not able to view the youtube clip from where I am :o

Shaitan as a concept, is an encumberance; a barrier; something that slows you down… The term Jihad is meant to describe the inner struggle to overcome your personal demons.

I was just reading Snorre’s : The Younger Edda, the scene of the creation of the world bears a semblance to the chinese version…
