Futurama, circa 1967

The Futurama theme, from 1967:

I had no idea that it was that old.

Bonus, a (more recent) Fatboy Slim remix:

Well, technically they’re NOT the same theme, since the melody from the show is missing, but it sure sounds like the same chords, doesn’t it? Who knew!

I always thought the use of chimes as a melodic instrument in the theme to Futurama made it one of the coolest themes on TV. I didn’t know there was a precedent. Cool.

OK, for comparison, here’s the Futurama theme (a neat vid in its own right that has all the sub-heads from the first four seasons)

In looking for that one, I found that someone has mashed the original music with the Futurama opening:

Okay, make that a BIG technically. Cause I’ll be damned if the chord progressions and even the “basic track” are not exactly the same! (Hell, they’re even in the same key!) The only thing that’s different, really, is the chime part.

How weird! Matt Groening, maven of all things quirky in boomer pop culture must have known this piece going into Futurama. Way cool.

Oh, good. I thought I was missing something.

leela is ugly she F***s horses do u agree???

Nope. It’s the same tune, pretty much. If Futurama had been a George Harrison solo album, he’d be getting sued by now.

Yep.

My sweet lord!
