From This American Life: An Astronaut's Sci-Fi Pet Peeve

From a recent This American Life, which might be the best radio show in the history of the known universe:

In episode 329: “Nice Work If You Can Get It — Stories of sudden fame, quick riches, and the downside of the dream job” an astronaut briefly discusses her love of sci-fi and what bugs her most about the dramatization of outer-space.

Hey…I disagree with her sentiment about the Vipers. Vipers are Atmo Flight capable which is why they aren’t boxes

Exactly… I was thinking exactly the same thing, plus “You poor kid… You’re not watching Galactica… You don’t know what you’re missing, you and your real-life space flight.”

This American Life is awesome. I thought about BSG during this segment thinking, “Hey!”

I was listening to This American Life the week of 3-22-08. They were talking about something interesting and ended up interviewing a NASA astronaut. She was discussing how she was one of 22 astronauts that rarely ever see space, all meetings, simulations and briefings.

Anyway, she was asked how she copes. . .the first thing out of her mouth was;
"I watch SciFi like Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, and Farscape!

How Geeky Cool is that?!? Maybe she is an avid listener to the GWC crew also?:eek:

Was it a repeat of this episode?

Yep! That looks about right! Thanks for the heads up.

Ah, now I get why that one showed up today. The original is about a year old. I get behind in my podcasts, but rarely that much!

We should have a BSG-TAL club. I am seeing Ira Glass speak in 10 days and I am so psyched. Maybe I’ll ask him if he likes BSG…

I thought it was so sad, hearing from that other astronaut who talked about knowing he’s probably never going to get into space. It made me want to go out and build him a Viper… but I’d need Chuck’s help for that.

TAL rules… If you feel like standing in line for the Q&A with Glass, ask him if there would be more new episodes if more people donated to the station. Have you seen the TV series? Is it good?

Also, check you local entertainment listings… The show is doing a live show in NYC, and they’re beaming it to theaters around the country

And here’s an Onion story that roughs up the show a little with some tough love:

She was more partial to the Borg cube if my memory serves me right. But possible the sphere would work?
