Forbidden Planet

the classic was on the other night. My son (8) watched it and loved it (altough the id monster freaked him a bit). That is one great movie!!

Amazing film. It was inspired by ‘The Tempest’ by someone by the name of Shakespeare. In turn it was one of the inspirations for the original Star Trek. Early epsiodes of the series have a distinct ‘Forbidden Planet’ feel to them especially the un-aired pilot ‘The Cage’.

When I first saw it I was familiar with Leslie Nielsen’s other work as Frank Drebin so it was difficult to see him in a serious role. But Anne Francis’ hottness easily distracted.

This is a must-see for any scifi fan.

Now that you mention it I can see the similarities between FP and “the Cage”… Robby was one of the reasons I liked the movie, Him and “Robot” from Lost in space were 2 of my earliest favorite characters. For a long time I judged my scifi by how cool I thought the robot were.

But I have to say R2 has and always will be #1 to me.

One of the finest science fiction films ever released, even if the theramin music does get a bit old after a while (that’s music playing, NOT the sound of the ship’s drive).

And the howls of the id monster stuck with me for years! They’re still creepy. Not bad for old-school cel animation!

Before Star Wars there was Forbidden Planet.

Forbidden Planet is my personal cure in case I accidentally watch one of the SciFi channel’s [sorrybarb] movie of the week.

The greatest science fiction movie of all time (in my humble opinion anyway). Except for the obvious sexism, it holds up extremely well even today.

And tobasco72, you mention both Robby and Robot from Lost in Space. Both of them were designed by the same person, Robert Kinoshita.

What’s wrong with being sexy? It’s got a half-naked woman being carried by a robot on the movie poster checking filtered Political-Correct chip nah it’s good. The main female character only fainted…what?..six or seven times.

Two things.

  1. Tanstaafl, maaan, I love the name. Wonder how many folks a) catch the reference and b) know what the acronym stands for.

  2. It wasn’t sexist at the time. It only is by today’s standards. Who knows what they’ll think of us in fifty+ years? There’s also the question of social skills–she was raised alone, in but the company of her (obviously obsessive-compulsive) father and a robot.

I did love the line “what’s a bathing suit.” That must’ve shocked the censors!

I loved this movie as a kid.
The screams of the ID were sooo unsettling.
As a kid it unhinged me, trying to figure out how I would be able to control my thoughts, if I were Dr. Morbius. It made me very anxious.

Good classic stuff !!

I’m pretty sure Robby and Robot got into a fight on an episode of “Lost in Space” once too.

Anybody know if Forbidden Planet is up for re-make?

Personally I don’t want to see a remake but it’s being talked about. J. Michael Straczynski is writing and James Cameron directing.

Thanks for link tanstaafl.
