for the botanic aficionados of the hive mind .

Got this plant in my office, I discovered I have a green thumb but for the life of me I can’t find what species is this plant.

I know it’s a tropical plant but I’ve been back to the store I bought it and couldn’t find another one like it and the guy didn’t seem to know.

Tried my facebook friends but alas this plant is still unknown.

So I turn to you all for the answer.

You are my only hope. (well not really but it sounds good)

Thanks

it looks like a variation of the Chinese evergreen.

Or it just really likes your office.

Yup, that’s what it is. Aglaonema modestum.

Looks like a Peace Lily to me: http://www.plant-care.com/peace-lily-spathiphyllum.html

Peace lily leaves aren’t usually variegated. The spadix is bumpier on the peace lily, too. The spadix peeaking out of the bud in the pic Mustitos provided looks more smooth.

Huh?! I got no idea what you just said! I just thought it looked like the Peace Lilies that were at the office because of the bloom. I’m a brown thumb person…I look at a plant wrong or touch it…it dies. :frowning:

LOL! Sorry, my degree is in biology and my concentration was in botany.

It’s the same family as peace lilies, which is why the flowers look the same. It’s a defining characteristic of the Araceae family. But, peace lilies usually have leaves that are solid green, not white and green. And the spiky part of the flower, the spadix, is very knobbly on a peace lily, not smooth like Mustitos’.

I love it when you talk all technical.

No problem! Gotcha now.

Battlestar Botanica! It looks like some variation of what we call the Money plant over here…

It is indeed a Chinese evergreen. After looking at a few sites I saw an identical photo with the same “Stripes” on the leaf.

Good thing to know too that the sap is semi-poisonous a little bit like a soft poison ivy irritation. I was extra careful removing the buds. The flowers are a bit of a let down, but its so “leafy”

I was a little bit sad to learn its one of the easiest plant to grow, I thought I was having amazing results, oh well, its still growing like crazy.

Thanks everyone, the hive mind is still all powerful and all knowing.
