I’ll add that while it may be one of your goals, don’t get too hung up on weight loss if you’re doing weight training. Muscle is denser and heavier than fat, so there is a possibility that you’ll be losing fat but the muscle gain will offset it. Don’t get discouraged if the pounds aren’t coming off as fast as you like, you may be building rock underneath:)

Stick with it, you’ll feel better and live better.

Edoz I think you made a very important point about not getting hung up on weight loss.

I took my first step in my running career today. I bought some running shoes. I bought some vibram fivefinger treksports. I wanted something that was good for running and hiking. Anyone used these? I like the idea of barefoot running.

Thank you Starbuccaneer, Rutabaga & galaxy_rising for the advice.

I have decided that I need to make my health a priority I think it will help me feel better about myself. But I have to take baby steps. I think healthy food is going to be the hardest since both me and my husband work we come home tired and neither of us wants to cook. Maybe when I start running consistantly I will have more energy and I will want to cook more. But first step is getting running.

Wish me luck!

Wolverines! update:

Yoga’s been going wonderfully, but now that we’ve moved I need to find a new instructor, because as much as I benefit from my own practice (working towards a daily one…) I really benefit from the challenge of an instructor helping me to push one breath more into a pose, or to show variations.

And speaking of moving - wow! I can really tell that my increased exercise level has had some effect, even if I don’t notice it in my appearance. The spousal unit and I basically moved ourselves (we did have a friend help, too), and I was very impressed by my strength and endurance during the move. Also, my muscles are recovering much faster from all of this work than I expected them to. So, hey, evidently this whole shebang is working. Plus yoga helps me be less stressed about life stuff, so it’s great all around.

My concern now is that in our new location, the grocery stores are… limited? As some might be aware, I love cooking and get great pleasure and relaxation out of it, so the lack of most all of my staples at the local stores is problematic. I’m trying to see it as an adventure, but I do despair when it seems that everyone eats fried chicken and grits constantly. Here’s to hoping the farmer’s market is nice.

ugh I HATE moving, but hey see being fit does help all around! makes your everyday stuff easier and when you have to do stuff like moving you aren’t killing yourself as much!

sooo I’m back, after a severely screwed up hill walking exercise in the UK (twisted ankle first day out, idiot friend who refused to turn back two miles in to day two and witheld analgesics on day two until grudingly givng me them in hour six) I only got back to the gym on saturday. 1/2 hour power plate (which was tough) and another half horu power plate this evening, with a full hour long personal trainer session tomorrow afternoon, that wil damned near kill me but i am going to do it anyways.
weight up but my Pt thinks i’ve lost weigh so perhaps it’s a muscle/fat thing, the walking was inredibly diffuclt, the paths are not smooth and you really have to watch your footing.

I’ll weigh meself tomorrow morning and let ye know how it’s going, still expect to be up though, not really sorted the food thing yet what with holidays etc.

How to run a marathon on a treadmill.

Were this person my “friend” they would likely be in need of analgesics and bandages. That is just ridiculous. I do hope you are better.

Uh, there’s no Scream Tunnel. No such thing as virtual Marathon Monday without the virtual Scream Tunnel.

current weight: 107.5, this is not good but my PT thinks I have lost shape around the shoulders so perhaps it’s a muslce/fat thing, did two pwoer plates since saturdya and off for the full on PT hour today, eight exercises (to be covered in eleven minutes) and then an 8 minute “burn out” at the end.

This will be tough and on his recomendation I am taking tomorrow as a rest day, may do a little walking but no intense work. I am off to hun tthe lesser spotted breakfast now, I will do another power plate thursday and a personal trainer hour on saturday.

@madamruppy, my knees are sore and I am in no hurry to speak tp that man again, but otherwise I’m good. Thank you for your concern.
[edit] that is 107.5 kilos folks, or multiplying ti out 215 pounds plus 21.5 pounds giving me a rather scary 236.5 [/edit]

I think the most important thing here is that you’re still at it working out and keeping up your activity levels. From following along on here and on Twitter when you make it to the gym it seems that you still enjoy the workouts and still appreciate the ‘post workout high’ and work for it. Feeling better is a major part of getting healthy no matter how much actual weight is off. So congratulations for sticking with it!!

As for me, I took this weekend off unintentionally but went for an early morning wolverines run this morning to get back to it. My job is making it tough because I get too stressed out and it makes me not enjoy the gym because I feel like I should be spending time doing other things (even though I usually don’t end up being as productive by not going to the gym as one would hope). But I’m writing down some workouts for myself that I think I will try going to the new gym the bf is opening so that it gets me into a new routine. And try to incorporate more yoga so I get in some relax time!

It took me 2 months, but I got through the first week of the “100 Pushups” program! i can now do 57 pushups in 5 sets, including a set with 15 pushups in it. I am quite happy with my progress (now that I’m making progress).

For anybody who’s curious, it took me about 3 weeks (at 2-3 tries a week, because it took my arms that long to recover) to complete day 1. Then I totally forgot about the program for a full month (oops), then, I did days 1, 2, and 3 this week on schedule with no problems.

ugh, mother frakker, my foot is killing me today

I am pretty sure the humidity is causing swelling and I haven’t had a PT session in about 3 weeks, so it’s not too surprising. But I am concerned that my planned Friday run is a bad idea. I’ll probably do it anyhow and ice really well after and hope for the best. It’s been a rough week–I need the aggression release.

Hi GWC’rs,

I haven’t been on the form in a long while. I had lots of computer issues but that is all fixed now. We also had a super busy summer with my kid’s activities, my mom had to have a pacemaker installed, our 13 year old lab died, our 6 year old male cat died and then his sister died a month later. (My mom, the dog and the male cat all happened in a week)

I got sick in December and it took four months, several rounds of antibiotics and breathing treatments to get better. In the spring I did a 5K charity walk with friends and I just wasn’t ready for it since I hadn’t done any activity in all of that time. I finished but it was really painful and exhausting.

However, after struggling with motivation, I have gotten back to working out. I started cycling and I am doing the marathon training academy base running program. It’s a 20 week to 5K program. I found that C25K was just too much for me. I need to get back to weight lifting but I kinda hate my gym. I want to add swimming into the mix too. My husband and daughter have taken karate for 4.5 years and I had decided to use taking karate as reward for loosing x amount of weight. My brilliant daughter pointed out that instead of waiting until I lost the weight I could be getting the fitness benefits now. So I started karate classes about a month ago! I also started taking Qi-gong at our dojo which is kind of like tai chi. I think my husband and I are going to clean out our garage and set up a workout space/dojo inside. I’m excited about that prospect.

Okay, hoping to be more active on the forum and looking forward to catching up with everyone.

so I went in for my regular PT session today and her still had the bikes out from spin class, I was looking at them longingly and he asked me if I wanted to try it, it’s a totally different kind of exercise to what I normally do and it took me a while for me rear end to g mubm (those saddles are not comfy).
However I managed to get through he said 95% of what a regular spin class is, all 45 minutes, I chose a “celtic” themed CD to listen to (big shock there), for the final track he said I coudl remain pedalling in a standing position I could get the class for free, he even put a twenty euro note in front of me to inspire me (not that I was doing it for the money, it’s about challanging yourself and for me, defeating his epxectations).

I managed it, so not only a spin class, but a bloomin well free spin class.

|Had a lin chicken fillet(grilled) with some pilau rice and seschwan style curry sauce (from a jar) afterwards, I’m delighted to hav gotten through spin, go me.

welcome back memyself, hope your recovery from illness continues apace, also motivational hugz SB, you really are a star (not sure about the bucaneer bit :stuck_out_tongue: ) and you’ll bounce back from this entirely temporary off time.
all together now… WOLVERINES.

That’s the most I ever managed to lose in a month, and during that period I was putting in around 30-50 miles weekly on the treadmill plus three-times-a-week strength training and a diet around 1,800 kcal daily. If you stay active and follow a decent, slightly negative diet, you can pretty easily lose 2-5 lbs a month. But it sounds like you’ve got absolutely the right idea: set reasonable expectations and goals, then try like hell to exceed them.

It took me 2 months, but I got through the first week of the “100 Pushups” program! i can now do 57 pushups in 5 sets, including a set with 15 pushups in it.

Maybe I should try this. I’ve always felt like my upper body is pretty weak, just a couple pushups make me feel like flopping onto the floor like fish out of water.

zen_mom

Welcome back, zen_mom! Being sick sucks, and it really is the worst when you get hit with an injury or an illness when you’re in the process of getting healthy and fit. I find that leaning back into it worked for me, because trying to go right back to the place that I was before I hurt my knee was hard, and it made me stay away from the gym longer.

What are your views and opinions on eating paleo and primal? I’m reading Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. It’s interesting but reads like stereo instructions.

Well after a month or two of not watching the diet, I finally got back on the saddle this week and managed to do a bike ride of 4 miles. I also managed to obtain the wii Zumba and went through it. I managed to do about an hours worth and I was totally sweating by the end of it. I can imagine that it will get you fit pretty quickly. Still doing my handstand pushups although I have to work back up to a full range of motion again.

Weight went up to 15 stone 1 which was my motivation to get cracking again and get uber fit.

Hey Wolverines! I am dreading the next two weeks. My gym is being remodeled and although getting new equipment is sweet, they are closed for the next 10 days. And next week my schedule changes to working 4 10 hour days (more like 11 hours with lunch) and picking up an extra shift next Friday. I will be fried mentally and I won’t have an outlet physically. Grr!

oh well something to look forward to right! I’m on 10 hour days now too, though with my job at the end of the day I’m mentally and physically fried ugh…just going to try and do what I can in the mean time and try not to get too down on myself for not meeting goals (it gets hard to run as far as you’d like when you’re standing on concrete for 10 hours =/ )
