I played FFXI for 4 years. The community is great. Many are mature people because the game focus more on PVE and cooperative play than PVP. It discourages and penalizes griefing (something I miss in EVE Online). I love the way the characters look as oppose to cartoonish look of WoW and the plastic looks of The Old Republic.

I signed up for the beta last night, but haven’t heard anything yet.

P.S. I looked for an existing FFXIV thread and came up empty. My apologies if one already exists.

Seems like I’m the only one interested in this game. Just as well.

I’m in the open beta, and it’s not that great. The game goes live in 14 days, but there are numerous crashes, bugs, and unfinished localization (text that aren’t filled in or in Japanese). I’m not sure they’ll make it.

The game looks great! But, the gameplay and content leave a lot to be desired.

I’ve been in a few betas and I’ve never gone over 24 hours without playing. Ever. Until now. I’m at around 60 hours since I’ve last logged my character in. I’m having a hard time believing that. But, that’s how poor the game is to me so far.

I don’t have high hopes for its launch.

I played FFXI for six thrilling months before stopping. When you got into a good group, the game was elegant and beautiful. The rest of the time, not so much.

They aren’t allowing new applicants for the beta, but the buzz so far has been pretty negative. They could really make a GREAT game by building on what worke din FFXI and improving on it. It’s a darn shame they’re apparently not doing it, at least not yet. I imagine the audience for FFXIV is built-in, so Squenix doesn’t need to worry too much about losing subscribers, but you can’t take on WoW with a game that doesn’t work well.

I played for 3-4 years. It’s great to have an active, mature linkshell. I’m still friends with them and played with them in the beta.

You have to try at random times during the day. Applications are off and on.

I haven’t read any buzz except word of mouth. And, you’re right on that count.

I have to agree with you on this as well. I think SE would be better off updating, upgrading and revamping (within reason) FFXI. But, SE is so stuck on (or fear claims of fraud) making non-PS2 game experience match the PS2 experience (the limiting factor compared to current hardware capabilities) that they refuse to do that.

When the PS3 version releases in 6 months, the game will prolly be in good shape. But, it seems they are releasing prematurely or underestimated certain hurdles for now.

Btw, I doubt SE is trying to take on WoW. WoW and FFXI/V caters to different players. WoW is more PVP/achievement and solo based, while FFXI/V are more cooperative, social, casual (at least FFXIV anyway) based. My uneducated guess is they’ll phase down FFXI in 3 years making it cheap to play ($5 or less a month or even free) and rely on XIV for subscriptions/income.

I loved that you could be in multiple linkshells. I had my own I ran (just a group of 15-20 folks who liked to play together, nothing too serious, we ran class quests and the like) and a few that I could work into otherwise.

I was a Red Mage, my wife was a Bard. She found no trouble getting into sweet groups with awesome blink tanks. I got to enjoy the stigma of bad red mages, but even though I played WoW for years, I never felt like I was a better player at anything than I was at being the good old RDM.

What class(es) did/do you play as?

SAM&RNG75,PLD60,PUP75 is in my forum signature on the linkshell forum. Though, I think I had levels in everything except COR, BLU, and DNC.

Sam was my main and first job I got to 75. In my linkshell, I was the skill chain go to guy. Afaik, I was among the firsts who could perform light and dark skillchains by themselves.

I also had a fully leveled (at the time) fellowship NPC. I chronicled the adventure at:
http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/Fellowship+NPC

I pioneered this feature (documentation wise) which was subsequently copied (without giving credit), word for word at times, at other sites. I’m not bitter though. d:

The normal blog-ish is at:

Edit: Found my last updated skill levels:

Ya I played FF11 for about 4 years. I got my Pld to lvl 63 and my Whm to 41. would have still been playing if my job hadnt taken me on the road for 2 years. I’m disappointed in FF14. Thx to 14 I’m finally getting my ass in gear and building me a Pc with a AMD x6 core. I’m still using a pent 4 as my gaming Pc

Yeah, my 4 yr old core 2 duo couldn’t play the beta. But, my laptop could. This is the first beta where I lost interest after only a few sessions.

This review is harsher than I would have been, but he does make valid points.

Japan online games halted to conserve power

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6303679.html

Major disaster causes Square Enix and Konami to temporarily suspend online services to save electricity.

Japan’s earthquake and tsunami disaster last Friday has caused power companies in Japan to ask consumers to conserve electricity. As a result, game publishers Square Enix and Konami will be contributing by suspending their services on their respective online games.

Square Enix will temporarily halt their online services on MMORPGs Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV. The services will be halted for a week starting on March 13 at 7pm. The Play Online support services linked to both games will also be stopped. As courtesy, Final Fantasy XI’s April service will be free of charge. Since the service halt affect sessions in and out of Japan, players outside of Japan will need to check the Play Online site for further details.

Konami will be suspending their services for Metal Gear Online. They have halted it since March 12 at 10pm. At this point in time, there hasn’t been any announcement on Konami’s site on whether maintenance has finished.

If there are other online Japanese game threads, please feel free copy and paste.
