FF Re-Watch: Our Mrs. Reynolds

Witness the introduction of one of my (and Sean’s) favorite Firefly characters: Yo-Saff-Bridg. When she shows up, you know there’ll be trouble – and interesting times ahead.

A hot babe that would want to kill Sean? He’s in heaven.

Probably my favorite episode of Firefly. This is the one I use to get people hooked on the show. I show 'em “Serenity 1 & 2” to get intros to the characters, then proceed in order. If they seem to not be on board the Firefly bandwagon, then I skip ahead to “Our Mrs. Reynolds.” Seems to work every time.

Man, so much greatness here. I remember the first time I watched it being very impressed with how blindsided I was by Yo-Saff-Bridg’s transformation from wholesome, backwoods sex-kitten to cold, calculating saboteur. I assumed that the whole show was going to be this comedy of errors, and would conclude with some mutually satisfactory way for Mal to be rid of his new bride. Boy, I was wrong.

There’s a lot of memorable stuff in this episode. I like the brief dialog after “Saffron” tells her story, and Mal leans in close to Jayne and asks, “How drunk was I?”, to which Jayne replies, “I dunno, I was passed out?” Mal just nods, and moves on. I like that we see that Jayne and Mal actually can get along (granted, alcohol seems necessary for it to happen, but still…).

I love the dialog between “Saffron” and Mal in his quarters. “I swell to think of you inside me…and I see that you do too.” “Nobody’s had a hold of my plow in quite some time.” “Good Bible.” (to be echoed by Wash’s, “Whoa…good myth ,” later). Really, really well played by both actors.

And then, of course, there’s Mal’s complete misreading of Inara’s “fall.” I absolutely love the self-satisfied way he leaves her shuttle once he’s “figured out” what really happened. That’s one of my favorite parts about his character as written. He generally comes out on top of most situations, but he’s not the brightest bulb on the tree.

I loved this episode too.

Yo-Saf-Bridg is simply the best written sexy rating booster out there. She beauty is required by the setting and yet she is a load of fun.

This actually isn’t one of my favorite FF episodes, BUT - the scene where it looks like Jayne is going to blow Mal away, when all he really wants to do is trade his favorite gun Vera for Saffron, is just priceless.

When Joss himself writes, it’s always something special: “Serenity” (the ep and the movie), “Our Mrs R”, “Objects in Space”

I love it when the Shepard tells him if he takes advantage of Saffron, he’s going to burn in a special section of hell, one reserved for child molestors and people who talk in the movie theaters. I love that line, I’m going to use it next time someone talks in the theater.

One of my least favorites to tell you the truth now there isn’t an episode of Firefly i didn’t love, but she just seemed to be added on like were looking for a bad gal, of the week. so why not her, she was cool, deceptive and hot. They corrected that in later episodes, in which i fell for the backstabbing murderous creature she is. but for me something didn’t ring true with her character in the earlier episode. that being said; Mal and Inara together were were great, i love it when they make Inara funny. and Zoe

you just got to love zoe in this episode.

Mal: How drunk was I last night?
Jayne: I don’t know, I passed out.

I mean who of us hasn’t had that conversation with friend at some point.

Absolutely one of my favorites.

If you didn’t feel something stir when Chrisitna Hendricks was playing her part, you certainly have much different preferences than mine.

I got my doses of her in reverse. I saw the entire first season of Mad Men before I watched Firefly. Besides being incredibly beautiful, she seems to have a quite a range of acting ability.

This isn’t one of my favorite Firefly episodes, but I was suprised at how much I liked it on the rewatch. Never really got a lot from the Yo-Saff-Bridg character, but I do like the influences she has on the crew and the second episode she’s in is better, in my opinion.

“Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill 'em right back!”

There is a cool song about this episode by Marc Gunn.

I’m catching up on the rewatch. This episode is excellent. Firefly fans, if you haven’t watched Buffy, it has even more of the Whedon-esque writing than Firefly does typically. If you like the whismical little dialogue flourishes and you haven’t seen Buffy, you’ll love it.

Just curious: How many people know Firefly, but not Buffy?

As a couple posters have pointed out, this episode takes some really nice turns when it could have been one big boilerplate cliche.

Zoe gets about twice as hot every episode – BUT, that said, she’s not simply a sexpot. Really well-rounded character.

Malcolm – Nathan Fillon – played a Big Bad (bad guy) in the very final episodes of Buffy, which appeared shortly after Firefly got the axe, and which were unsatisfactory for a few reasons. The show was maybe gonna have another season, and then it wasn’t, and they had to hurry and wrap it up super-quick. (Which is yet another reason I’m glad BSG decided to wrap at four instead of hold out hope four five). But anyhow, Mal’s role in Buffy didn’t really work. Part of it was the hurried nature of the eps. But now that I’m re-watching Firefly, I think he was simply miscast. He’s a good actor, but he’s just too like-able to really oooooze evil, as the character required.

Really glad I joined in the FF rewatch.

That’s a good observation, dxf. I wonder how he would have managed as Angel (which he auditioned for). Sustained dark and brooding from Captain Tightpants? He would have made a good puppet, though

It’s true! See his 1 episode role in Lost for more convincing- he plays such a wonderful emotionally wounded cop.

I love this episode.

Mal: “Well, my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.”

Zoe: “Captain, everyone should have a chance to congratulate you on your day of bliss.”
Mal: “There’s no bliss. I don’t know this girl!”
Jayne: “Then can I know her?”
Zoe: “Jayne, don’t sully this!”
Mal: “You are going to be cleaning out latrines with your face if you don’t cut that out.”

There are just TOO many lines, scenes and moments in this ep for me NOT to call it my favorite episode and I’ve gotten people hooked based on this ep as well. With scenes like “Good Bible” and “Good Myth” it’s pretty hard to disagree to how good it is!

We also meet Jayne’s most cherished Vera, we really see how Inara feels about Mal and he totally misses it.

Too funny.

“I knew you’d let her kiss you” ???

Mal, you don’t know what you’re missing out on…

I think Mal knows what really happened but he doesn’t want to admit to Inara that he does.
