Favourite Characters in Sci-fi?

I am curious…

I am watching Babylon 5 (bought the whole thing, films and spinoffs and all in one big box for £75 or $150) at the moment and I am loving Garibaldi - he’s a cheap Bruce Willis!

Also, in BSG, fave is Starbuck or Gaeta. Farscape is Aeryn Sun. Star Trek, Sulu Chief OBrien and Dr. Bashir (esp. together).

Come, tell me!

Favorite character in ALL of scifi?

Maybe Deckard from Do Androids Dream etc.

Favorite in SciFi? I’d have to go with Colonal O’Neil (Richard Dean Anderson) from Skiffy’s Stargate: SG1. Although, now that I think about it, Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillian) might make it a tie. The perfect blend of authority, cuteness, and “frak-you”-ness.

Damn, forgot about Jack! Love him - but Hammond was awesome too.

I have never read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep/seen Blade Runner (a crime, I know) so I can’t comment.

My husband loves Chewie

Jane from Firefly is a favorite for me.

Of course your right that Garibaldi is a great character in the B5 arc.

Barkley in NextGen…

Harry Mudd in STOS…

Hey grandfathergeek, Welcome to the Forum. Love the handle.

Barkley and Mudd were fun characters. Garibaldi is one of my favorite characters of all-time. Jayne is well, Jayne.

Wow. Picking one is difficult.

Tied for first: Adama (BSG) and the Doctor (Doctor Who)

But I also love (la) Starbuck, Rodney McKay (SG Atlantis), Samantha Carter (SG), Ivanova (Babylon 5), Captain Janeway (Voyager), Data (TNG), T’Pol (Enterprise), Spock.

Solomon ‘Sol’ Roth played by Edward G. Robinson in Soylent Green. Memorable character that made you really think about how things are and how they could be if we don’t get our collective shit together.

Welcome aboard, GFG. Remind me to show you my lawn.

Yikes. I know what you mean, but it always ended really badly for him. Apparently ‘cruel and unusual’ aren’t in the Federation’s constitution.

You have a lawn, Pike? Do they grow those up in Baltimore?

Favorite character in SciFi…hmm…well, I haven’t done enough reading in the genre to go that route (although Mua’dib in the first Dune book is someone who comes to mind as a favorite), so I’ll stick to visual media. Hmmm…

Gaius Baltar (BSG) He’s, to me, the most human of the characters (yes, more than even–ironically–Tyrol). His arc has been fascinating and heartbraking and even though he’s ostensibly the villain, I find myself constantly rooting for him to rise above himself and do the right thing.

Wash (Firefly) This one’s fresh on my mind having just watched the entire series. His witt, bite and charm make him a most memorable character and someone who reminds me of how I would probably react were I in the situations the Serenity’s crew were to find themselves in. Like Baltar, he’s a very human character.

R2D2 (Star Wars) I was going to say Han Solo, because I always wanted to be him as a kid, but R2 is definitely my favorite character in that series. He’s chipper, optimistic and always willing to go above and beyond. And he looks like a trash can and can fix your car.

H.A.L. (2001: A Space Odyssey) Like Baltar and Wash, a very (ironically, and very much intended as such) human (I detect a trend…) and poignant character. His “death” scene is heartrending, and it’s just a guy turning off a computer.

It’s a precious commodity, that’s why everyone needs to stay off it.

It’s quite nice especially with the constant fixture of Pike in his lawn chair equipped with shotgun.

Ok, you win. That’s a great unanticipated choice. Does Chuck have a Barkley action figure in his Obscure Action Figures Collection??

I think I have to say the entire set of main characters from Firefly. Because in all of sci-fi I am torn between Mal, Wash, Zoe, and Kaylee, so I’ll just pick the whole crew of the Serenity.

Mal or Garak

There are so many great scifi characters but one of my absolute favorites is Dr. Sam Beckett.

It was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. I was just watching TV one day then suddenly I was surrounded by blue light. I was transported to a room with smooth plastic surfaces and a slight hummmm in the background. There was also a scientist asking me questions about myself and all I remember is he had really bad breath. You must forgive me because my brain is a bit Swiss-cheesed IYKWIM. All I know is that since that day thing are going great for me and I believe it was all thanks to Sam. God bless Sam!!!

All of scifi…prolly Starbuck or Johnny Rico from the book Starship Troopers not the movie

Oh wow, I don’t know.

Starbuck is up there. So is Six (and no, that’s not cheating, it’s getting more bang for your buck, so to speak). And I love Sisko. Hmm I see a theme here… but there are so many more.

It’s like asking me to choose my favorite book. Or a favorite author. I just can’t, there are too many!!

Yay, second post! (Work is slow today, I get to finally leap into the forum foray with both feet firmly affixed forward…)

Since I wasn’t entirely certain of a distinction was being made between published characters and filmed ones, so I’ll be clear.

Zaphod is only Zaphod on the written page, and with all apologies to Sam Rockwell, and Mark Wing-Davey, the character just isn’t the true President of the Galaxy without every ounce of Adams’ ego, bravado and smarminess. 'Nuff said.

On screen, I’m going to catch hell for this, I’m sure, but for a lot fo the same reasons, Fox Mulder is just the man. No apologies for his habits, his passions, his foibles, or his faults…sticks to his guns and embraces his inner geek without completely becoming one of the Lone Gunmen.

I guess I gotta say Kirk, he was the original captain and seemed human with some sides that were perfect, but nowadays I’ll say Adama or Mal, hmm can’t decide heck I like Tigh too but for a different reason.

So hard to pick just one, so…

Starbuck -BSG
Mal -Firefly
Picard -STNG
Londo -B5
Shane -Space Above & Beyond

I’m sure there’s more, but my brain is missing at the moment.

G’Kar but mostly because of Andreas Katsulas. his speachs and just the fire in his acting. a much missed actor.
