Well…mainstreamy ones at least
That’s a tough one. It’s like asking me to pick a favorite child. There are stories in each era that I absolutely love. Damn, I can’t even choose if you put a gun to my head. So… Baltar FTW.
Which one includes the original trilogy?
I agree with tighfighter you just can’t pick one.
Galactic Civil War
Nobody else likes KoTOR? T_T
Then I vote Galactic Civil War… Largely because I’m not up on the EU…
I love the KOTOR era. My Fav. comic is the Tales from the Jedi series and my all time fav. game is KOTOR.
I had a hard time picking just one, because I like them all but at the moment I have to say it’s the New Republic era because of Mara Jade, but KOTOR is a close second because I love Revan nearly as much as Mara. Although that may change at any time with all the new SW stuff coming.
Is there a term for the period between jar-jar and the ewoks?
You mean between the prequels and ANH?
I think they have recently started calling this period The Imperial era.
“The good part.”
tbh I didn’t know it went past the vong war. I stopped reading EU but would love to finish sometime.
They’re all good, but I’ve had more good experiences in New Republic than any other, so I picked that. KotOR and Legacy come in a close second and third though.
Could I have a one sentence run-down for each period, please?
KotOR (Knights of the Old Republic) - As in the video game. Technically anything before the events of Episode 1, more specifically things happening three to four thousand years or later (the first and second Sith Wars) before the battle of Yavin.
Clone Wars - This one is a little fuzzy, but I take it as meaning the events directly leading up to the Clone Wars, the Clone Wars themselves, and the aftermath. Everything between Episodes II and IV, then.
Galactic Civil War - Episodes IV through VI. The original trilogy we all know and love, our ragtag group of heroes fight against the Empire, etc.
New Republic - Arguably one of the largest eras in Star Wars so far; This covers everything immediately after Episode VI all the way up to the Vong War. This is where Thrawn et al happened. When you think of “EU”, you’re probably thinking of something from this era.
Vong War - The Yuuzhan Vong war. The New Jedi Order series and it’s accompanying tales.
Galactic Civil War II - I think this is the Legacy of the Force books. People get angry and fight over stuff. Again.
Legacy - Fast forward to the future, where the Empire rules again (and they’re badasses) and Ben Skywalker has a son (who is also badass). They beat each other up. Good times. Note that this doesn’t take place directly after GCW2, as far as I know.
Hope that helps.
Just out of curiosity, who picked Vong war? That’s certainly an interesting choice, I want to hear the reasoning behind that.
I picked the vong war, partially because it was the farthest I’ve gotten. Some of it, yes, was a bit over-the-top, but I’m a huge Jacen Solo fan. Someday I’ll finish it.
Dude I’m in the same boat as you. I just keep putting it off for one reason or another. I’m at the final paperback Force Heretic Trilogy.
Yeah, I’m actually right there with you. It was a neat dark turn for the saga and the character situations were very interesting.
Despite all the negative talk about the NJO, I totally loved the series. It was very dark but I loved that there was really no guarantee everyone would survive the series. My only complaint was the characterization of Mara because she was all over the place in that series, mostly due to there being so many writers. The NJO did lead me to dub Mara and Luke the Jedi Energizer Bunnies.
I’ve discovered that I tend to disagree with the folks who dislike some of the series, mostly the NJO and Legacy of the Force. I loved them both and so far the only SW book in my collection that I have been unable to make myself re-read is Rogue Planet.
