FASA open thread

I noticed a lot of people talkin’ about old FASA 'Trek. So I figured why not set up a thread that’s nothing but that here.

I was in a campaign a few years ago (that ended BADLY) and the notes for it are still up: http://18inchfly.net/startrek/index.html

A lot of our time was spent “breaking the system” by making our own ships. And playing “what did FASA do wrong” with their own not-by-the-rules ships.

Well there are kinda the following areasa of discussion for the Fasa thread.

  1. Fasa ST RPG (original pkging)

  2. ST TWOK Starhip combat game

  3. ST 3 Starship combat game. Revised rules and more ships. Basicaly the same game as ST2 game.

  4. Repackaged and rewritten RPG game

  5. Star Trek Tactical Combat Simulator: ( Came out the same time as ST IV) The revamped game with three levels of rules. Improved version of the ST2-3 games. THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE FASA TACTICAL GAME. This is the version that all of the tech manuals and Ship recognization manuals work with ( and all the bwebsite and fan sites. NOBODY really even mentions the ST2-3 versions)

  6. ST TNG First Year Sourcebook. - One book first came out at the end f season 1 and is a revamp for RPG ( althou realy thrown together with one seasons worth of knowledge) and stats for the Galaxy class, Constelation class (stargazer) Ferengi marauder, Warbird, TNG era updated stats for the gargarin, Excelsior, and TNG show chracters and a few races from the first season.

  7. Star Trek TNG Officers manual. A more detailed RPG guide that tries to bridge the gap betweent he RPG FASA-verse and the TNG show. TNG era stats for a few clasic Fasa ships and Stats for the Galaxy class ( more acurate then the first book), but mostly the same ships as the first TNG book. Strangley… this book has Characters stats for Worf and Picard, but none of the rest of the crew… this book is kinda pointless in a lot of ways ( well if you have the other book!) In the back of this book is the Fasa “comeing soon” leaflette has a miniatures for the game listed. Ferengi marauder, Galaxy class, stargazer, and a $12.50 borg cube.

My local game store owner told me at the time I bought the STTNG OFF MANUAL that FASA would cancel ST soon. He said his rep told him that Paramount got pissed that Fasa printed the two new books. Their Star Trek License rep gave them all the needed info to make the books because they had a huge open door policy that went with their very all encompassing ST license. ( those FASA books were Knee deap in ST pics, photo’s, art and Stills). Evidently Fasa’s POC at paramont wasnt consulting with the suits. The suits upstairs formed the oppinion that ST TNG was a seperate property and the whole thing needed to be rernegotiated. Fasa told them to F themselves and Paramount said "you have to licesnce BOTH ST and STTNG, not one or the other, and the new rate was for a HUGE monatary difference. It was big enough that Fasa didn’t reup their license. ( a big deal considering that FASA had a pretty large selection of lead mini’s for the tactcal game being produced in their battletech mini factory).

I also want to point out that Fasa Trek was prety important on a few levels. The DC universe used Fasa ships in their comics. ( Miranda class with TOS engines, Romulan Nova Battleship, Bird of Prey Frigates and Cruisers, A few Klingon destroyers the L-9 I think it was.

Even Star Trek 6 had me going “well if he put his power to 2 power to arm sensors and was close enough to do the sensor damaged ‘to hit’ rules, they could fire while cloaked!” because I was a Fasa player!
