Cool, I didn’t know that about the sugar puffs. Unfortunately for the scrap metal in my game the dude fell off the railing and died (a glitch I assume).
That probably happened to me as well. Some evens happened that i missed but the out comes still exist and my character supposedly knows about. Like the Sheriff of Megaton i guess got killed or something in my game. He is nowhere to be found and his kid told me he died or something. Also the first time i went to Gildersleves (i think) I missed the battle of the “superheros” so i reloaded and went an alternate path into the town and was able to trigger the sequence.
I am starting to really enjoy this game, bad graphics and all. As for saving stuff, I would save lunch boxes, lawn mower and motorcycle parts, conductors, etc as they can be used to make interesting things once you get the schematics. I wouldn’t drink those extra fancy Cokes you find either. Can’t remember the name off hand, but they are worth more than the usual Nuko Coke and seem somewhat limited. In fact, I have taken to saving everything just in case (other than bottles, plates or other things that are in great abundance). You can make quite a bit of money selling raiders clothes and extra weapons. I usually repair them to half decent condition in order to carry more stuff. This ups their value to weight ratio. Also, if you head to the right places at the beginning of the game, you can get 600 caps right off the start. (300, 200, 100).
Just finished Arafu and I finally get to hear something different on the radio. I really enjoyed that quest. Better than the average. I highly recommend it, though I’m sure most of you have already completed it as it is an obvious firster. If not, just talk to Lucy at Megaton.
For anyone new to RPG’s, try to use everything before you sell it. If it says you need training to use, keep it. Read every book/comic that turns up in AID (rather than misc) and don’t sell it. As I said, I am keeping every odd thing that does not appear to come in great abundance. Hopefully, I will have some time in the next day or so to sneak into a Mirlurks nest. I HATE those things!
Out of curiosity how did you finish the Arafu quest. Are you playing a good guy/gal or a bad guy/gal. I’m going the good path and am trying to talk my way thru everything. Next time i might play bad and try a more heavy handed approach. You can reply via Spoiler or message.
As for Mirlurks. I hate those bastards. They are hard to kill and seemingly over powered. In fact i hate most of the creatures in the wastes. The worst Mirlurks so far have been the NukaMirlurks which you can find in the Nuka Cola plant I barely survived going in there and had to reload and save a ton. Giant Radscorpians are tough to kill and tend to kill Dogmeat really fast. The Deathclaws are pretty tough as well. Especially when they are attacking in pairs or more but I am ok with that they are supposed to be really tough. I find it easier to take on a pack of Super Mutants than a couple Giant Radscorpians.
I’m playing a fairly good character. I think Arafu would be very, very, very hard to play as a bad character. My favourite part of Arafu was the journey.
Once I found the family and saw how well armed they were I realized that an all out fight would not be easy. I tried to steal the leader’s key, but got caught. Eventually the leader just gave me all the info I needed to get the kid back home to Arafu. BTW, which end choices did you make? I ended up agreeing that Arafu would give blood donations for protection.
It would be nice to get my hands on some of the gear held by the Family, though. Wow, they are well stocked.
I heartily agree with you on the Mirlirks. It’s hard to aim at their tiny little triangular faces. And they are nasty aggressive. I go out of my way to avoid them.
I finished the Those! quest, which I gather is a take-off on the movie Them! There is a nice little pay-off at the end. Well worth pursuing that one. I think I am going to concentrate on helping the Megaton store owner with her book as the quest almost seems like a tutorial of sorts and I need to level up a bit more before pursuing more of the main quest.
Yeah, the survival guide quests are fairly good. Be sure to do the optional part of the quests as well as the main part and always be positive and non-snarky to Maria (?) when talking to her about them; it will affect how good the book is and how good of a bonus you get at the end.
After the book is done you’ll get occasional random encounters in the wilderness where people come up to you and tell you how much the book has helped them, which is kind of fun.
I played it pretty much the same way you did. I didn’t try to steal anything though i just did a bunch of talking. I had the same ending. Next time i am going to try to play the opposite. But i did learn from them and it makes bloodpacks much more effective.
One thing i was kinda amazed by is how easy it is to go from being a saint to being pure evil. I was just messing around showing a friend the game. I didnt intend to save the game or anything so i went and shot up Rivet Town. My Karma is about as positive as it gets. I rarely steal anything and have only accidentally killed one good person (well two if you count the overseer) and have only committed one intentional act of negative Karma. So i am pretty far on the good side. But after going and killing everyone in Rivet Town i checked out my karma and it said i was Evil Incarnate.
I have decided to play thru the game 3.5 times. this first go around i am playing the really good guy. Next time i am going to play a very bad guy. The 3rd time i am going to play thru as a Han Solo type Neutral and very sarcastic. Then the last time i am going to load a save from just before the final mission and then i am going to go off and kill everyone in the whole world. I am going to rid every town of life. and destroy any person who crosses my path. I think that should prove interesting.
Umm, I should hope so! That was kinda really, really bad, eh? The question is, how long would it take for your character to recover from that sort of drug induced crazed mass killing?

Per your last option, I see much death in your characters future! I am only at level 4 or 5 so maybe you can be a crazed killing machine at level 20, can’t say. But at this level, justice would prevail fairly quickly. You will have to let me know how powerful the character gets at level 20.
I will likely play this game as a fairly good though somewhat roguish character. I soon get bored with RPG’s when I play evil. P.S. I like the new avatar. Who is it?
Thanks for the tip on the book, Tanstaafl. My character has been done out of some money for being too darn good and she has become a bit lippy lately. I will have to remind her to be nice to the shop owner.
Who said anything abut drugs…,I just wanted to have a laugh…HAHAAHHA

Im about level 18 or 19 now and not much gets in my way. I have some problems with Giant Radscorpians and Death Claws. But not else much kills me. I’m just waiting to get me some power armor and then i will be pretty much invincible.

Its my new Xbox Avatar. Its what i would look like i think if i were slightly skinnier and turned into an Xbox Avatar.
It’s neat. Kinda like a cross between a Lego and a Sim.
I have a Wii avatar, but I don’t think it can be moved onto the computer. Or at least I dont think I could move it onto the computer. Not that I would want to…
I finally let Dogmeat die. I was in the middle of a mission and my last save was to far back and he got trapped somewhere and died. I morn his loss but am happy with my new Ghoul sidekick.
Also I jsut got the Power Armor training and plasma weapons. so its not to bad
I was seeing the sights in Washington on Columbus Day weekend. At one of the Metro stops on the Red Line there were ads everywhere for the game. It felt weird seeing a poster of the Washington Monument punched full of holes a few blocks from the real thing. Call it hair-splitting if you will, but I see a difference between a game where the world is blasted by dragons or UFO’s, as opposed to nukes. All these apocalyptic stories unfolding in something like the real world feels distasteful. There are places today, after all, that don’t look much different from ‘Grand Theft Auto’ or ‘Fallout’. But then, I’m old enough to remember playing my family’s Coleco Telstar in 1979, so maybe I just prefer sticks and dots…
Runciman, I’m old enough to remember actual duck-and-cover drills in school, so in some ways Fallout is something people in my generation actually expected. I’m glad to play it as just a game though.
I know what you mean, Runciman. This is the first “realistic” game I have played. Well, if dealing with ghouls and dog sized bugs is realistic. BUT, this game is out of an alternate reality. Imagine that the fears and culture of the 1950’s never ended but some technology marched on past what we have today. Imagine a world where what the people of the 50’s thought the future would be actually happened, robots, fallout shelters, lazer guns, Grease style leather jackets and all. Then blow it all up. That’s Fallout. Not real “reality”.
I’ve never been to Washington, so I can imagine it would be a bit creepy to see something from your actual life standing in ruins on the screen. But isn’t destroying iconic American symbols to underline the fictional destruction of a society a rather old tradition? I mean, how many times in the movies has the Statue of Liberty or the White House been blown to bits? The fact that the destruction of the Capitol City can stand for the destruction of the entire country and probably the entire world suggests the City’s importance in the minds of the players.
I do enjoy the UFOy or elven/dwarfy stuff a bit better, to be honest. But I still like Fallout. Just my two cents.
Thanks for the input, tanstaafl & Cymbeline. Truth be told I never kept up with all the developments in video games since Nintendo 20 years ago. There’s an article in this week’s Sports Illustrated, btw, that mentions that deer hunting is more popular in arcades now than in the great outdoors…
Huzzah! Bethesda has announced they are releasing the mod editor for Fallout! Plus the first official DLC!

I was looking around for a solution to another glitch and found out disappearing or dying characters is in fact a glitch. There are solutions for the PC crowd as the character can be re-spawned or moved from an odd internal character trap of sorts. There are pictures on the web of the trapped characters. Looks a lot like what happened to my Mass Effect character a few times. She would suddenly be pulled out of a battle and be stuck on some pedestal beside the room. Very odd.
Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the same stuff on the radio? For the next download I would love to have that radio loop lengthened!
I finally beat the game on my first play thru. 67 hours or so. I thought the main story was just “ok” but i loved everything else about the game. Now I’m playing thru again this time as a chick and and evil one to boot. I’m still undecided if i want to go and do the whole Survival Guide again as an evil character or jsut blow up Megaton. I think i’m gonna do the latter. Also this time i might take the reveal the world perk because i thought i had explored most of the world and then i went and counted how many places i found and realized i was missing about 20% or so. Its crazy man.
I was pretty much in the same boat, Lister. I tried to play evil, but I just couldn’t do it, and it was ruining the enjoyment of my game. The only game I ever really could play evil was Mass Effect, but that was more because evil just meant you were a dick. What I am doing on my second play through, is playing as a Sniper with high sneak, small arms, and explosives, all of which are on the very hard setting. It’s a lot of fun. You can still kill enemies in one hit if you play your cards right, but you better have some mines layed out if they detect you. Next time, I think I might play as Rambo, nothing but big guns.
Regarding the dead NPC bugs, I found this information that appears to help colsole users. Hopefully all those mourning the death of Walter can bring him back.
""When entering Megaton, the game occasionally places characters in a starting position that is adjacent to (rather than on) the walkways or balconies, causing those characters to fall to their deaths. Walter is particularly prone to this problem, as his starting position is often supposed to be leaning against the railing outside of his workplace. (The bugs noted below may also be a result of this glitch.) Characters who die this way can be resurrected using the console (click on the character’s body and type ‘resurrect’). “”
