I do not know how many others out there watched this series. But I loved it and when it got cancelled I was so sad. If you are too young to remember it from when it was actually on TV. I am happy to say it is now on Netflix instant watch. Thank goodness for Netflix!
I remember cruising the aisles of Target one day in the DVD section a few years ago and squealing with delight upon seeing the complete Earth 2 series on DVD. And I rarely sequel. But knowing a I could re watch something from my childhood I loved and thought I would never see again. It is just awesome.
I am so excited that we live in a time where a lot of the old TV shows we love and cherish are available to watch again. Even if you get to the end of the DVDs and once again feel the rage and sadness over it being cancelled.
If you liked Earth 2, you should check out Outcasts on BBC America tonight. Sean described it on the podcast like Lost meets BSG, but I would also say it’s like Earth 2 meets BSG.
Outcasts was great, bit slow for some but was building some great plot lines, till the BBC moved it to an other channel and a later time slot. It shed tons of viewers and was cancelled.
I agree. I remember my father always talking about shows he watched as a child and wishing he could see them again (Soupy Sales, in particular). I experienced that nostalgia with Buck Rogers, Original BSG, Voltron, and Transformers.
The funny thing about that is what you remember as a child doesn’t always translate as an adult. You have an affinity for what it sparked in your youth. In my father’s instance, he remembered Soupy as risque and outrageous. In retrospect, the show was tame compared to what people remember.
For me, I really loved Buck Rogers, et al. I would fantasize and act out scenes. I flew a Viper behind my couch. I used a toy gun and holster and strapped it to my leg using a left over strap from one of my mother’s handbags. I wrote my own version of Voltron and Transformers. We (the human race) evolved past our flesh bodies and into metal ones that could survive in the harsh conditons of space. We could truly exploit the final frontier.
I look back on those shows with great fondest because they sparked my imagination. The shows themselves were out for a fast buck and selling toys. They jumped on the Star Wars band-wagon (Buck and BSG) while Transformers and Voltron were cast away anime geared for American audiences.
I am thankful for the countless hours of play they inspired.
I have not seen Outcasts but I will say that I was a Syndication whore. I never watched a show on primetime. I only saw them in the 3-6pm time slot once they hit Syndication (Happy Days, Cheers, Seinfeld). Seaquest DSV falls into that category as well. I never saw it on NBC when it aired. I watched a few episodes here and there on SyFy.
Nowadays, I catch up on all these shows I miss on Netflix. Having that library at your fingertips is magic. I’m really upset with all the squawking about them raising their rates. It’s silly. It’s still cheaper than cable/satellite. I have the 3-at-a-time w/ Unlimited Streaming ($19.99 per month). With the price hike that will be $23.99 per month. I could cut back to 2-at-a-time/unlimited streaming and get the same $19.99 price. Whiny whiners. /rant off
There seems to be an increase in media about displacement as a result of invasion (Falling skies, The Walking Dead, Outcasts, Battle: LA, Skyline, etc). Is this the aftermath of BSG or some sort of commentary on human survival in a harsh economy (Losing your job, your home, having to move, etc.)?
