Has anyone read the dune prequels and sequels?
For that matter have any of you read past Children of Dune. I haven’t… but like the others ( took forever to make myself drag throuh them, but I liked them)
How say you?

I’ve read all the prequels so far, and enjoyed every one of them. They fill in alot of the gaping plot holes in the original books. I’ve reread Dune recently, just before starting the prequels, but its been quite a number of years since I read any of the sequels. So, the sequels aren’t quite as fresh in my mind as the original.
I’ve read all of the Dune books by both Frank and Brian Herbert. I would strongly advise against reading the two sequels. I enjoyed both prequel series, but the sequels were horrible. If I had read the last one instead of listening to it on audio book, I’m not sure I could have finished it. ThotFullGuy will probably back me up on this.
Funny you post this; I just picked up the original book today at chapters…and I’m downloading the movie as we speak.
I haven’t had a chance to read or watch either of them, but I’ve heard incredible things about them (well, the book at least :p)
In case anyone’s interested, Dune (the original!) was the first book club selection, way back in 2007. You can check out the discussion (or add to it!) here.
I’m a big fan of Brian Herbert’s writing. While I agree the first three books of the series are the best, God Emperor has a lot to recommend it, and while Heretics and Chapterhouse weren’t up to the others, that’s like saying Picasso’s Girl Before a Mirror isn’t up to Guernica or Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, IKYWIM, IMNSHO.
Brian Herbert and Kevin A. Anderson are no Frank Herbert (not even close), but the books are worth reading for fans of the universe. They’re certainly way more accessible, and we can’t all be snobs. I have many, many major quibbles with many of the choices they made, but hey, you can’t take this stuff too seriously, right? It’s fiction, for gosh sakes.
God Emperor is still my favorite by far. I’ve read the sequels and prequels–not bad, but not up to par with the originals
Finally, other humans who’ve read the Dune novels. You don’t know how rare this is for me.
Amen! God Emperor gave me chills.
That’s sad to hear. I’ve only ever read the Frank Herbert books, and after finishing Chapterhouse, the sequels were the only BH/KA releases I had seriously considered picking up. I could always just reread the originals.
I’ve read all the prequels and sequels and …midquels. And I’m in the middle of the most recent mid-quel “Winds of Dune”. I’m a big dune fan, and ever since I joined the GWC Forum my avatar has nearly always been some form of Duncan Idaho (yes, right now I have Duncan as hobbit with Gandalf as you can see.)
Yeah, I have to say the BH/KA sequels Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune were really dissapointing.
Also, I used to play this game very very frequently:
Really? I owned it, and never could get anyone to play it. Of course, that was true of most of my games. Fortunately I got as much a kick out of reading the rules as actually playing.
Well, my friend, I almost hate to even suggest this, cuz I hate to make a commitment that I won’t follow through on…but we (you, me and other GWC fans) could try playing it online (Play By Email ). I’ve done it before with a couple of friends and I’m all set up for it…If I can find the HTML files.
Oh man, I’ve been looking for a copy of that game for a long time. I’d PBEM if I could find one.
I read through the first 3 books in the Dune series and stopped for some reason after starting God Emperor. From the comments here, I guess I’ll have to go back and pick it up.
Alas, many moves later and I have no idea where it is.
Might be interesting to try to make a web version.
Well, I dug through my stuff and found the html and graphics files for a PBEM Dune game I ran, I guess 5 years ago(?).
Take a look at my home page for it. A lot of broken links, but I’m showing it to ya’ll just to demostrate how it can be done.

(check back at the above link now and then over the next couple days as I resturrect the website.)
Innnnnnteresting.
The slow PBEM penetrates the firewall.
Okay Dune fans, Just for fun I went and restored most of this website.
(If you looked at it yesterday hit refresh).
