Douglas Adams

Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul has got to be my fav by Adams. What do you guys think?

I don’t think I could pick a favorite. I would take them all as one big book!

I actually meet Douglas Adams at a book sighing for one of the Dirk Gently novels (I think Tea Time, but I’m not sure)… I said something complimentry, and he looked me in the eye and said “did you get the bit about the teeth? Nobody seems to get the bit about the teeth.”

Well, I went home and re-read the book cover to cover just looking for anything to do with teeth, only found the word twice and didn’t see anything in it. It probably took me years to finally accept that he was just screwing with me… I still sometimes wonder if I’m just not smart enought to see something…

After having played the H2G2 text adventure (which he wrote) I can definitely say that it sounds exactly like something he would do.

One of my favorite Douglas Adam’s quotes is one he made regarding the process of making a movie after his years of development hell,

“Making a movie is like trying to grill a steak by having a succession of people coming into the room and breathing on it”

Brilliant.

Pike: You have no tea.

Everyone: If you’re a DNA fan – the man, besides just H2G2 and Dirk Gently – you owe it to yourself to pick up Salmon of Doubt, which includes a bit of unfinished story, but more importantly quite a few DNA letters, interviews, and essays. Some of my absolute favorites relate to atheism. Great, great stuff.

Yep, definitely planning on it. I’m reading this out of sequence - when i picked up Tea-time i didn’t realize it was part of a series so right now i’m reading the first one in the series and then will get ti Salmon of a Doubt. I read somewhere that Tea-time is the best out of the series. Is that true?

Dismal - too funny!

Pike - what text game? is it an online thing?

It was a text adventure game (aka interactive fiction.) Think “Zork” and you have the idea. Now there’s an illustrated version from the BBC online.

It is legendary for its difficulty. There are items and choices early in the game that don’t come into play until the end. Save often.

ooh, i’ve tried this - yea, i don’t think i got past the first level. LOL.

I re-read Starship Titanic (which I know is not technically DA, but close enough). A lot of fun, and just a little bit smutty.
