Does it really matter?

I know that being a fan, I want to know who/what Kara is, but does it really matter?
In many ways I feel as if what Kara is not important, rather, what is important is the person. Even if she is a god/lord of kobol/hylon she is sentient, and chooses to be Kara Thrace. As long as she is Kara, does it matter? As long as she is still kicking ass and taking names, it shouldn’t matter. But it does, at least it matters to Kara.
I feel like the message of BSG is that it matters not what you are, but who you are. Tigh understands this. He will continue to serve as XO of the Galactica till he feels as if his tour of duty is up. Even though he is a ‘cylon’ he stays with the fleet, and holds his position as Colonel. I think The Cheif also understands this.
Kara and Tory don’t seem to get it. To them, what they are is so critical that they are willing to put what/whom they love in mortal danger in order to find out what they are. Kara used to be so comfortable, but after she ‘died’ it seems like what she is has become important. Actually, since her death, everyone seems to care about what they are more.

Sorry for the stupid and asinine rant, I just needed to spew some…stuff IYKWIM:D

I think the difference is that Tory knows what she is, but Kara doesn’t.

All she knows is that she is a FF, that dosen’t mean anything yet. She is not a skinjob, she is something different. While she knows she is a cylon, she does not know how cylon she is, I get the fealing that the FF are in some way more human.

Actually, I think deep down Kara knows this. She’s a bit thrown off by her weird feelings after her return (like she’s observing her life rather than living it, I think is how she put it to Sam on the Demetrius) and seeing her dead body on Earth (that would frak with anyone’s sense of identity). The way she acted during the uprising, though, tells me that she continues to be, deep down, Kara “Starbuck” Thrace, who kicks ass and takes name when she has to and will continue to do so.

Word. Unlike Tory, little miss, “Uhg! Isn’t it always those damn humans ruining everything!”, Kara knows at the very least what she stands for.

Look at Cavil vs. Athena. Cavil is so worried about what he is/ what he’s made of that he has become a miserable, genocidal crapbag. Athena, on the other hand, gave up her “what” identity, and embraced her “who” and is a much happier cylon for it.

I can agree with a lot of this. I’m really fascinated with the idea of destiny, especially with Kara, but part of me wants her to go “frak it” and save the world through not following her ‘destiny’. That would be a triumphant finish worthy of Kara “Starbuck” Thrace.

That being said, I know why Kara cares. She wants to know if there’s something wrong with her, like Boomer, and if she’s to blame for everything she’s done, or if someone’s messing with her life. Heck, I’d want to know that, especially after years and years of brainwashing from Mum and then four months more recently with Leoben.
