This is looking more and more interesting.
I’m very excited about this. Looks like gritty and intelligent sf. It’s nice to see something with a non US location too.
indeed–I’ll be checking it out tomorrow night
it’s really well put together - great story and great acting. all in all awesome movie.
This was one amazing example of brilliant sci-fi
The 3rd act was a little dissapointing but the first two were brilliant
That was phenominal, gritty, ambigious, really really well done, great attention to detail. Best movie I’ve seen in quite some time.
I went to see it last night and I heard that it was excellent. Unfortunately for me I got motion sick from the shaky camera and had to leave about a half hour in.
I just got home from watching it. some minor wtf moments and a plot hole or two. But a damn good movie IMO!!!
So will Christopher come back in 3 years for D10 (2011)? Or will he be a putz and just leave his people stranded. Also if he does come back is he bringing then pain with him or a simple pick them up and leave mission?? Or will the aliens overthrow humans by the time he get’s back
Just saw it, would definitely recommend it to everyone here at GWC. Will probably write a full review once I organize my thoughts a little more.
saw it this afternoon as well, enjoyed it but like was mentioned in here, the final act was a bit of a let down, we’ll see how it does but I have a feeling it’s not going to rack up the box office sales enough to merit another movie
I base that on
A. the theater wasn’t that busy when I saw it for the first afternoon showing in the ‘super screen’ which is usually pretty busy
and B. my one friend who’s one of the biggest movie buffs I know, usually knows anything about movies before I do, honestly had no idea what D9 was about and/or what it is
so I see more people doing a 'wait and Netflix it kind of approach to it
overall I’d give it a 7/10 because of some plot holes that really seem to bug me
I’ll share more as soon as someone informs me how to do the spoiler text for here since I’m still a noob
I plan to see this tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
I really dug the movie. For me the Third act was something i really loved. This was a movie where i really had no clue on how i was going to end.
I didn’t know if Chris was going to get shot down at the last minute…or if he was going to make it back to the ship and double cross Wickus and attack Joerg. This also was one of the first times in an alien movie where i was rooting for the aliens. The things the humans did in this was so awful that they deserved everything they got. I cheered anytime a bad guy got his comeuppance which is something i almost never do in a movie
I loved the effects in this. The Prawns looked great but the stand out was the “Robosuit thing” One of the stand out moments was
when Wickus was running away in the Robosuit and he stopped and decided to turn back and help Chris. You could see the shoulders slump and read every emotion that Wickus was going thru but it was in a machine. I also could see every bit of pain he went thru when he was getting shot.
Oh and three words (and a symbol) to describe another moment of awesomeness…and i am not going to put a spoiler tag on this cause i want to encourage folks to look forward to an awesome moment…
Gravity Gun + Pig…
Outside of UP i think this is my favorite movie of the summer thus far
And Darth…you do spoilers by typing in
enter your text here
but without the extra space after he second spoiler and the bracket.
I too thought it was fantastic, and the third act was just as good as (if not better than) the first two. Hands down the most entertaining and smartest sci-fi film I’ve seen in a long time.
I saw an 8:40 p.m. showing Friday night, and the auditorium was packed. I predict quite respectable box office returns.
I really enjoyed the movie except for one moment where the charcter did something which made no sense at all.
When he whacked Chris with the 2 by 4 and decided to try piloting a ship he had no idea how to fly, and leave the son fatherless and poor chris to the mercy of the MNU. It was a moment which made me shake my head and go,… “What the F#$K???”
It is one heck of a movie, especially for a budget of only 30 million…
That part made perfect sense to me. That moment…
Wickus was still a relatively cowardly character and was reacting to Chris kinda going back on his word. He figured he could use the guns and he could maybe figure out how to use ship and then the healing equipment once aboard the Mother Ship. It was a logical, if reckless and selfish, choice. That stuff happens all the time in real life.
I just the film last night…
I thought the effects were great, and was touched in the one part (not trying to give anything away) when the prawn said to his son “this tent could be ours,” but outside of that I was really not impressed.
The concept was good but, I don’t know it… well… The movie hit on everything except entertainment. The film was just not entertaining.
Just saw it 2 hours ago… frakin fantastic. Really, really good. I was thoroughly entertained, entirely immersed in this movie for the whole 2 hours.
I agree… I had no idea how this movie would end, either. This is reason enough to watch it (whether you like scifi or not), simply because the denouement was unpredictable… best praise you can give any story.
What was going to happen to Wickus? All the way down to the last few minutes, I couldn’t tell whether they were going to actually kill him at the end. So many movies are predictable like that, and D9 totally wasn’t. And you know, if they had decided to kill him, I think I would have been okay with that ending. Not cause I hated him at the end, but cause it would have been an equally valid ending to the story. Someone had to pay for all the horrible acts we saw, and it might as well have been Wickus.
I have to admit, when Robo-Wickus zaps the sniper that’s trying to kill him, and the sniper blows into a billion tiny chunks, I was totally rooting for the prawns at that point. Damn. D9 really screwed with my head. Humans suck.
It made sense, but the whole time, I was like “aww, damn Wickus! Just when I was starting to like you, you pull this craaap!”
Wickus stealing the ship was believable to me, because he wasn’t really all that great a guy to begin with. The first 30 minutes (the whole prawn eviction notice thing) was basically Wickus doing some pretty stomach-churning, barbaric acts, like murdering prawn young. Betrayal of an ally he doesn’t particularly like is totally in keeping with his mental state, at that time.
Does anybody here remember seeing The Matrix in the theater, when it opened in 1999? I walked out of the theater absolutely blown away, knowing that I had not seen anything like it before… I had a similar feeling walking out of D9. Catch it… you won’t be sorry.
Yes, the actor portraying Wickus did do a fantastic job. To be able to hold the audiences sympathy while oscillating between typically heroic and yet very real but disappointing behavior is a difficult act to pull off successfully.
Not surprising the movie is getting good reviews here. It’s dark, challenging, and features the trials of an anti-hero. Sounds a lot like BSG to me.
I wonder what they would come up with if RDM and PJ ever managed to team up?
a really good movie they could have cut out about 20 minutes, but the last act was very well done the acting and storytelling were strong throughout.
