Dissapointed with the New Colonial Government...again

It sounded like a nice idea at the time. But this new Captain’s Quorum doesn’t seem to be working any better than the old Quorum. Now they have even more voices crammed into an even smaller room, and all these captains are used to being listened to on their own ships, so they’re even less likely to settle down and compromise with each other than the old representatives were. And in the session we saw, President Lee was doing a half-[sorry-Barb] job of keeping order and exuding authority. The best he seemed to be able to muster was to yell right back at them. Real inspiring, Apollo. You have better than that in you, I know it.

Why not just send a representative from each ship instead of hauling all the captains out of their command decks every time the fleet needs to make a decision? And maybe it’s about time the Colonies adopt a bicameral system to relieve some of the deadlock once in a while. Maybe the old Quorum of 12 acts as a sort of Senate/House of Lords, with the Captain’s Quorum/Ships’ Representative Quorum as a House of Representatives/House of Commons. I know we’ve argued that a functioning government with this small a number of people left could be an exercise in futility anyway, but at this point it couldn’t hurt.

On a side note, it was good to the lead judge captain from Baltar’s trial again. Nice bit of continuity there.

It’s not unlike Iraq, where Saddam ruled with an iron fist. Now that he’s gone, you try putting some semblance of order over there. :frowning:

I agree. I saw it and relized wuickly that you cant have an orderly government in that situation with a rep from every ship. They really needed to consilidate it somehow into less representatives.
Bicameral would be best, but difficult to orginize. Having that many elections would be problematic at best.

The Townships should be easier to control by a central federal fleet Government, all the Captains have done so far is shout out loud in the talking shop, the fleet should be easier to impose control over since the townships are frakked without the poobarge or the fuelships cooperation etc.

It’s a lot unlike Iraq, since Iraq is an imposed nation on people by foreign powers to bind together separate tribes, nations and races…

Nevermind.

This new Quorum is not long for this Erf, anyway… after the climatic battle, I gotta feeling most of these guys are gonna be dead.

Wha? Is Lee going to go all zarek on them and shoot them all?

I actually thought the flight captains have a good point. If Galactica is going to shit, which she is, then it does make sense to salvage whatever scrap they can get from it. At least they kind of acknowledge, albeit begrudgingly (though I can’t blame them for that. Acceptance takes time when it’s only been four years since the attacks, and it’s not like they knew as much as we the audience do about cylons), the cylons now to be a semi permanent member of their fleet, and are already talking about the basestar as the defender of the fleet (since they are already discussing the scrap parts of Galactica.) So, in effect, they did accept Lee’s proposal.

While Lee does kind of suck at being the moderator, I like that these flight captains are more vocal in their demands and what they want to do, and that Lee is at least giving them the information and letting them understand everything that is going on and making realistic decisions about it. Lots of shouting, but at least more functional as a government than the old Quorum, who usually is about 10 steps behind on what’s going on because Roslin never tells them much.

BTW, why did that one flight captain ask about Gauis Baltar? Was he being sarcastic, as in ooh, ask the crazy dude on Galactica who you’ve given arms to, or being sincere, as in I want to know what the pseudo religious/militant civilian leader thinks on the matter?

Well if you look at it, Gauis and his group are now in charge of food distribution on Galactica. They also have the means to protect it and themselves. So yes he is now a power broker.

BTW that judge is Tigh’s(Hogan’s) Real Wife.

just keep shooting the quorum until you find one you like; its the cool new way to govern

Look on the bright side: no more rigged elections

This is a true factoid. Looks like, if she wanted to, she could give Ellen a run for her money, too. Michael Hogan is a lucky man.
