Daniel - Pivotal plot point or red herring?

Isn’t just like the BSG writers to take what was originally a fraked-up continuity glitch and turn it into a possibly major plot point? I had written off the cylon numbering discrepancy as just a continuity glitch. When they numbered the cylons, they hadn’t developed the concept of the final five yet. Hence, 7 cylon models with one labeled 8 was no big deal.

Instead of just leaving it as a half-forgotten continuity glitch, they take their error and turn it into either a huge plot point or red herring. Who was Daniel? Starbuck’s dad? Baltar’s dad? Could Cavil still have him around somewhere on ice? (One resurrected, the other seeing a head character…)

Damn I love this show!

I think one of two things will happen:

  1. The one surviving Daniel will turn out to be Starbuck’s father.
  • Ellen said he was artistic, and we know Mr. Thrace was a piano player.
  • There’s a “clue” in the “Truth Will Be Revealed” page on scifi.com that shows a picture of Starbuck playing the piano with someone. I imagine this means we’ll see her flashback to her father or that she’ll meet up with her father at some point in the next few episodes. In any case, it’ll probably help explain who/what she is. Obviously, if she’s half Cylon, it would explain her return from the dead.
  1. The sad story of Daniel will simply serve to show how jealous, petty, dangerous, and otherwise frakked up John Cavil is.
  • I think RDM said in his podcast that we’ll learn more about Daniel in Caprica. Since RDM says that all of BSG’s dangling threads will be tied up in BSG itself without the need for explanation later in Caprica, he might not see the Daniel thread as important to BSG’s story, other than explaining why the Cylon numbering system skipped a digit.

And it play perfectly into the regular numerology of 12+1:

12 used zodiac symbols + Ophiuchus

12 colonies + Earth

12 known models + the dead 13th

And we find out there are 13 cylons on Friday the 13th.

That was my first thought, too. Don’t forget the 13 tribes, too. I think Daniel will probably end up having been Starbuck’s dad. Anders’ brain scan actually reminded me of the mandala at first.

In all seriousness I agree with Glimfeather’s 1st choice. I will be very surprised if “Danny,” is not Kara’s poppa.

Everyone seems to be dismissing the possibility that Daniel may in fact be Starbuck herself. Cavil seems perfectly capable of doing something like that. And planting that horrible childhood in her head seems right in line.
