Custom built action figures

For a few years now Ive been dabbling in custom 1/6th scale action figures. It seems like a pretty geeky hobby to me. Ive found myself on more than 1 occasion having to correct people who want to call them “dolls”. “No, they are action figures” I would say. The ones Ive done so far are based on the video game Metal Gear Solid 3.

I have more that are unfinished as of yet.

No, that’s sculpture, I would say.

Nice work.

I’m with Pike – that’s great work. Would you mind sharing a little detail on the process? I’m really interested.

Sure Chuck, you start out with a blank 1/6th scale body (lots of different ones out there), I’ll admit that they resemble a ken doll a little except they are made for customization and they have many many points of articulation. Very detailed in that regard. There is a huge hobby base centered around 1/6th scale modeling so you can find an abundance of clothes and weapons and such. I rounded up the correct military gear and made the necessary customizations I needed to be acurate with the character of Big Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3 (from my favorite video game franchise). Then I had a guy do a custom resin mold of the head and some of the clothing and gear that I couldnt find anywhere. I also had to get the right weapons and make them look right. The rest was just painting and assembly. The heads came in plain white, so I had to paint each one by hand (that is the most time consuming part of he whle thing). Were talking tiny tiny paint brushes here. A little glue, a little assembly and alot of patience later I had some pretty good results I think. Even managed to sell a few of these and make back most of the money I invested into it.

Wow iGhost, that is really impressive. I can imagine the amount of patience it takes to do that. Kudos on making back your investment! I can’t imagine many hobbyers can make that claim. Could this become a side business for you?

Thanks alot. I did consider making this a type of buisness, but I honestly dont have enough time to dedicate to it. But that doesnt mean I cant make a little money on the side now and again. But like all my other hobbies, I do it mostly for me.

That’s awesome iGhost! Metal Gear is one of my favorite game series.

those are really impressive looking
