Nah, he obviously upgraded it to use whatever tech they use in the future that allows small ships to enter and leave orbit.
The space shuttle he “restored” was Columbia, which exploded after they made the episode and is currently in several million pieces, scattered over thousands of miles. Doohan’s a great mechanic, but that’s pretty much Humpty Dumpty that he managed to put together.
