Oh my. Have I mentioned how BRILLIANT this series it? It took me a couple of viewings to absorb this episode all in. Once was a leisure viewing just to enjoy and savor it and once was a detailed viewing to sort it all out. Below it what I’ve been able to come up with so far.
Lucas really is going insane. Perhaps the same insanity that supposedly hit Jason. However, I have my doubts on whether Jason really is insane or not. I do not have any doubts about Lucas. ----OOOORRRRR---- this could be an effect of whatever happened to Curtis. It was good to see Bra’tac (Tony Amendola) on screen again. I miss him.
And Julian? That kid is being smart - manipulating Lucas, voluntarily going in for questioning, engaging Jim Martin - Julian is definitely a player on scale with the big boys.
Lucas clearly walks out with the pieces to the time device right underneath Sonya’s nose. Either she’s a moron for not catching it - which I don’t think she is since she clearly knows that Lucas is going bonkers - or Lucas was using the Time Travel device fragments coupled with his CMR hacking code and the stolen ARC code from Alec’s mobile phone and Sonya knew about it. If this is the case than Sonya clearly knows the police and possibly Kiera/Alec have all of the fragments now. This does not have the potential to end well. I’m glad I kept track of Alec’s phone that Julian stole 2 episodes ago. It did turn out to be important. But did Julian really give it to Lucas? Could have Escher gotten his hands on it as well? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
The usual 2077 “flashback” was a bit weak in this episode. The overall moral lesson of the episode was government versus private sector rights into personal privacy data. But what I got from the “flashback” instead was that somewhere, someone has been collecting all CMR data - and might still be for anyone that is equipped with a CMR that goes back in time. There was also no usual “flashback” scene closeout. So the ties to the future are perhaps the weakest I’ve seen in the show for a while…unless the show is waiting for a very large payoff with this story int he next episode or two.
Betty was obviously stalling this entire episode. There was so much data availability I can’t imagine that she is that incompetent not to find anything useful on Liber8. Someday soon her association with Liber8 will be uncovered. She can’t stay hidden for much longer.
I’m glad that the show has continued wondering what’s up with Gardiner. I’m surprised that his agency - CSIS - has taken so long to account for him. By the trailers for the next episode I know it’s going to be a major story so I’ll keep my comments until then but I have been tracking it. It was good to see Agent Lewis personally getting involved at this point though.
Travis hasn’t forgotten about Garza. In fact he’s willing to go to great length to parley with Cameron about his missing friend. But like everything else about the freelancers, there was no movement on this story this week.
I definitely got a Person Of Interest vibe from this episode. There were constant camera video feeds at the end of most scenes and at the end of the episode Escher is sitting on his perch observing…everything. How does one person keep it all straight? The man must be OCD because no normal human could keep track of that much real-time information regardless of prior knowledge, agenda or number of screens available.
I did enjoy Kiera’s CMR usage in the episode. Determining that the CMR tech was lying - or at least being less than truthful. And scanning to see that Lucas’ truck was there only minutes before she and Alec arrived. I love those effects.
Jim Martin’s ploy to take Sonya and Travis off his back was interesting. It will be even more interesting to see how Sonya and Travis use this against Jim given that he is much more useful to them as Mayor as he would be to them dead.
Carlos gets spears thrown at him by both people he interrogates - Julian and Jim. Jim knows that his department is being financed by Escher, a man who’s interests have nothing to do with the public. And Julian throws a stinger at Carlos about today’s police force shooting Julian first then asking questions which was not the policy of the police force of yesterday. You can tell it will become more and more difficult for Carlos to defend his job as the world changes around him. Especially when Inspector Dillon refuses to go public with the truth.
Escher is definitely playing from the same playbook that Kellog is playing from. Kellog calls him out on it ans Escher didn’t deny it. The question is why? He COULD be the ultimate good guy in all of this or he could be the ultimate evil. Either way, there are a lot of chess pieces and players on the board right now. It’s a joy watching them all move around. It’s interesting for now that Kellog reaches back out to Sonya for help. I’m not sure Sonya - or the reunited Sonya-Travis team - can do anything about it, though.
Emily is clearly an unwilling participant. It’s a shame that she’s giving the ARC code to Escher, but then again I’m sure she has no choice.
We didn’t see Warren/Miller in this episode nor did Alec make any headway on locating Elena’s body. This is a storyline that needed to be kept in the forefront and wasn’t.
We haven’t seen Kiera’s husband Greg or son Sam in a while. In fact Kiera makes a startling statement about the future that she wants to go back to being the same future that Alec in 2077 warned his 2013 self about. Is she giving up on returning to the future to save Alec from making the same egregious mistakes? As of now, that would be hard for me to swallow.
We also haven’t seen Jason or Alec’s mom in a while.
As always, I’m looking forward to the next episode.
