Continuum Episode 2.01 Second Chances **** SPOILERS ****

Episode Summary from en.wikipedia.org:

Following the events of the Season One finale, Kiera decides to work on the edge of the law, getting support and resources from her friends at Vancouver P.D., while keeping their hands clean of her tactics. Alec is at odds over the death of his step father, arrest of his step brother, and the message from his future self. He moves in with some buddies, gets a job at a Memory Express hi-tech store, and refuses to answer Kiera’s calls. When Vancouver’s mayor is assassinated, Kiera works on the case with her former police department partner, Carlos Fonnegra, with CSIS Agent Gardiner dogging her for answers about her forcefield and invisibility. Kiera eventually gets Alec to call her and help out, also returning to the police when Carlos points out that her recent capture of a gang member may be jeopardized when the case goes to court due to her unaffiliated status. Kiera tells Alec she will confront and destroy Liber8, and its growing band of 2013 followers, to preserve the future. Alec is uncertain, asking if they should trust the message from his future self (Kiera says it is 50/50). A flash forward finally reveals the message that Alec and Kiera have seen - Alec 2077 is proud of the tech-smart legacy that “their” father taught them, he regrets his part in helping the corporate-dominated future unfold, and young Alec is the only chance to stop it. Unknown to Kiera and Alec 2013, we then see that Alec 2077 had loaded data directly into Kiera 2077’s brain chips (CMR).

This season has definitely shaken things up a bit. The show seems a little darker and more ominous starting with 2077 Alec Sadler giving a message through Kiera’s CMR (which is painful) to young Alec Sadler telling himself to prevent the future at all costs. Talk about giving yourself some lofty goals!!! No wonder the yound tech super genius is conflicted in this episode.

The connection with nightmares for Kiera as the message is implanted in her CMR is interesting. It’s like Kiera felt trapped by it and was rebelling against it. Even Greg seemed to know what was going on when he looked up at Alec’s floating apartment.

At the end of the episode Kiera still gives Alec the Time Travel segment, most likely thinking that it is now her only way back to 2077 now that the building has exploded with Theseus.

Travis’ built-in revival system is interesting. Talk about a pacemaker on steriods! Remind me not to mess with one of these super soldiers! And that’s probably the reason why Sonya kept trying to fire the gun - at Travis’ head/brain - to make sure he was dead even though she had run out of bullets.

I thought it was nice that the writers gave us a glimpse of Liber8’s path forward with Matthews little speech to Kiera in the bar - Liber8’s approach to revolution against the corporations is to infiltrate criminal world, the business world and the political world. My guess is that we will seeing much more of that throughout the season. We already saw part of it by Garza killing the Mayor and Liber8 backing Jim Martin in the emergency election.

Kiera is now like a super hero crime fighter, acting alone and working behind the scenes for the police. CSIS agent Gardiner continues his anti-hero role. I’m looking forward to seeing those two clash more.

Travis offers himself up as protection to Julian in prison. That’s a dangerous combo! Gardiner has no idea what he’s allowing by having those two in the same prison.

The show has upped it’s effects budget this year - at least with the first episode. Kiera reconstructing the assassination from all those surveillance feeds and her updated questioning CMR HUD was fantastic. I hope the show continues to have more of these updates in store for us this season!
