Continuum Episode 1.09 Family Time

Alerted to a bulk purchase of alarming quantities of ammonium nitrate (a fertilizer used in explosives and agriculture), Kiera and Carlos visit Roland Randol’s farm to check up on such an excessively large purchase of farm fertilizer, and identify who’s been purchasing it. Having tracked the source to Roland’s farm, Kiera is somewhat taken aback to find Alec there, not realizing that Randol is his step-father. Kiera is shown her CMR suit is about to be restored to full functionality by Alec. Randol assures them that there has been a mistake and that he never purchased as much fertilizer as they claim. When they check the storage shed however, they find a truck rigged with the chemicals and ready for use as a bomb. It’s Randol’s son Julian and his friends who are looking to make a statement, even though the elder Randol has never preached violence. Events spiral and mushroom’s into a tense armed standoff - Carlos is shot and they are taken prisoner, but Kiera and Alec try to gain control of the situation.

So Theseus Day. Hmmmm. Perhaps it would have meant more if we were given some more build up outside of this episode what Theseus Day was and what it meant. Otherwise it just looks like another Kiera versus Liber8 episode.

As for Kiera being present for all of Matthew’s significant loses I’m sure that will come back later in the series and if it doesn’t it should. Whether Kiera motive was to just not be lonely or gain back the segment for the Time Travel device it is hard to tell.

But what we do learn is that Matthew’s involvement in Liber8 is all coincidental. It was Matthew’s sister that was really involved. And with Greg having a shady past with Kiera maybe she does have feelings with Matthew. So perhaps the only thing grounding Kiera in the future is her son now.

Julian is turning into a badass punk. Shooting Carlos and then leaving the farm through the back route after his father is killed. Kagame linking up with Julian probably also will assist Julian in his plight.

As for Alec he gets to see Kiera’s suit being used for invisibility. Even though this episode was chalk full of loss for Alec this is the moment of wonder that keeps his head in the game.

There are two “confessions” that matter in this episode. Kiera tells a delirious Carlos her whole story and Carlos tells Kiera he still trusts her even though he knows Kiera lies to him. The second “confession” is Kagame to Sonya stating that the events on the farm will directly impact him. Both confessions are meaningful but only one will be remembered.

The series one finale is the next episode. I can;t wait to rewatch it. It’s full of awesome just like this one was.
