Continuum Episode 1.03 Wasting Time

Episode Summary from en.wikipedia.org:

Kiera and Carlos investigate a series of mysterious murders; where two victims have had large cylindrical holes incised into the backs of their necks, and were drained of endocrine fluid - in fact, the victims’ pituitary glands have been removed. A review of the victims’ DNA reveal a special gene, one that would be used in a futuristic super-soldier; and so they discover that the crimes were committed by Liber8. Unknown to Kiera, Liber8 is making the effort to save Travis, their leader (in the absence of Edouard Kagame; who is believed to have not survived the jump), who is quite ill and the glands are needed to synthesize a cure. He’s on his death bed however leading some in the group to start jockeying for position in the hopes of replacing him. Kellog, one of the group who is going rogue from Liber8, arranges to meet Kiera and tries asking for a cease-fire with Kiera; by bringing her a gift, one that could cost her and Carlos their lives, but it may just be a trap. Ultimately both survive, and it leads to Kellog’s expulsion from Liber8.

Please use this thread to discuss the series’ third episode. Rule: Please keep spoilers limited to those revealed during the series up to this episode only.

The sole “flashback” to the 2077 timeframe was the terrorist cell raid by Kiera and other CPS officers. They were able to apprehend Sonya Valentine, The Queen of Hearts. The raid also led to Kiera’s experience with booby-trapped criminals/terrorists sitting on chairs and allowed Kiera to move faster than she would have at the end to save Matthew and herself.

Also important is that Kiera’s suit is damaged by Curtis. Without any suit-techs around in 2012 I can imagine that this is going to be an issue. Sort of like Doc Brown’s Delorean being in 1885.

It was also nice at the beginning of the episode for Kiera to give a run-down of all Liber8 members, including Eduardo Kagame, definitely pointing to his series return.

Matthew is quite the operator. We see the foundation of Kiera and his work-relationship beginning in this episode. Matthew is also very manipulative, especially on the weak minded. By the end of the episode he not only ridded himself of a direct threat, but also stabilized the group’s power struggle by having Curtis killed.

We also see a little more tech in this episode. Kiera can “tag” someone with her gun that stays with the taggee for 24 hours.

Carlos mans up and covers for Kiera. He definitely gives all sorts of trust where he’s only been deceived the entire time. It seems a bit odd that a police detective can be duped so easily.

Of course at the end Kiera steals the time device piece from the evidence locker. We can only guess where this will all take us into the future of the series.
