Concering things at Cons

First Post! Ha!

Question:
Has anyone seen something thats tech/science advertised at a convention?
Would Con folks have an interest in non-fiction space stuff?

Background:
My day job is engineering on aircraft, but in my free time I’m a space advocate. Trying to get people interested and involved in space exploration, science and all the other fun stuff.

I volunteer with the National Space Society (http://nss.org/) a non profit group, and this year I’m helping organize our national conference, International Space Development Conference, ISDC (http://isdc.nss.org/2009/) which is being held in Orlando Fl.

One of the refrains I often hear from space people is that they got it to it from scifi books or star trek (the older ones at least). Knowing people that work on the shuttles, their far more Serenity and Millenium Falcon then Enterprise.

It seems to me that advertising our event and organization at a con would be a great idea, it,s an audience that’s perfectly accepting of space flight. But I’ve never seen it done, of course I’m not a huge con person, so I might just be missing it.

I’d like to get an outside opinion before I dent someones budget by getting a booth and literature at a con.

Hell yeah! The very first Trek convention had a space suit on loan from NASA. I’t been a very cordial relation since then.

You talk to space people? Do you work at Area 51?

j/k. Welcome to the forum. You are our second resident rocket scientist.

Welcome PlaneEngnr!

So its a reasonable concept. Thats encouraging.

I think it depends on the Con, some are probably attended more by anime and fantasy fans, which are less likely to be interested in real space program related things. The Con that I got to every year, ICON always has a fair amount of real science programing, however that might be influenced by the fact that the Con its self is on a College Campus.

You might want to attend a particular con first to see if there would be a fit. One con I would recomend is Dragon Con, they have a very strong science and astronomy track in addition to all of the other things they have. Several of the Astronomy and science podcasts I listen to have live shows at the Con. The next best may be the various Comic Cons around the country. Also, Gencon may be one to look into. I haven’t been to that con in a long time, but there is a good bit of Sci. Fi.
