Heavy rain and winds are just starting here now. Hoping the power stays on at least until tomorrow morning. Tornado watch is in effect which is not too big a deal but as Jayne would say it is disrupting my calm.
Rain since about 3pm Eastern, no wind to speak of, and now after midnight, a little lightning. I’ve got no plans for this little storm, other than plans to pick up a few sticks in the yard some Monday (the horror…the horror…), and maybe have to reset the clocks once.
The local news, though? Twenty minutes of footage of cars driving through a puddle, and a shot of the Long Island coastline with dark houses along the beachfront. (Hello? It’s midnight?!?)
I weep for the panicked sheeple who have delved whole-heartedly into this media-spurned frenzy. You’d think we never had a good windy storm before.
BAH! BRING IT, YOU POORLY NAMED TROPICAL FLOOZIE!
Weather channel reporting that a surfer was killed Thursday in VA due to rip currents cause by Irene. So yes, that person is the 1st casualty reportedly caused by Irene.
Lots of wind up here in Connecticut. We still have power, cats are still dry. It’s actually kinda cool to watch!
Looks like I slept through Irene. She didn’t seem to mind though.
As many of you know, Irene veered west of Boston.
MBTA (Mass public transit) suspended all service effective 8am Sunday, August 28th. Service is expected to resume Monday morning, the 29th.
Good thing I have no travel plans.
power’s been out since 9am…my sister is also literally trapped in her house by two feet of river that used to be her block…oi!
Well, it is just about finished here. No real damage to my house luckily. No power though, hopefully that will be corrected tonight. Some parts of the Island were hit pretty hard, hopefully they can get everything back in order in the next few days.
I’m glad that the back-end of Irene fell apart after hitting NC and that everyone (well members on here, very sad about the loss of lives though) made it through Irene intact. Hope that everyone gets dried out and their power restored soon!
Vermont is being ripped to shreds. My town is one of the lucky spots, but so many historic and tightly-knit communities are under water. The water’s still rising. Keep your fingers crossed for everyone in the path of this storm!
Stay safe and dry.
Oddly, Cape Cod was upset that they got mostly wind and very little rain (which they apparently need.)
Unfortunately, I still don’t have power. Luckily my office does, and some nearby areas. I am hoping to get it back tonight, because I really don’t want to eat cereal for dinner…
Stores out of canned goods?
I don’t think so, but the only way we have to cook anything is the stove, which limits our options. Also, holding the flashlight up the entire time while someone else was cooking is pretty annoying.
Eat out of the can like you did in college. d:
Local news said half a million ppl in MA are w/o power. Most should have power back by tonight.
One person in MA was killed by electrocution, so by careful of power lines.
MD still has half a million-ish without power. They’ve got out-of-state crews helping, but even so repairs won’t be complete until the weekend.
47 hours without power. Lost water pressure yesterday for four hours. Neighbors, darkened still open stores and utility crews were all great. If you’re in the dark, hang on, the crews are working 12 hour shifts. I saw a lot of out of state plates helping us out. Trees are down everywhere even if you can’t see any locally. Beware of taking long fruitless trips in search of ice. When it’s gone, it’s gone in your entire area. Gotta go empty the refrigerator, only 2lbs of ground beef made it through.
Just like with Isabel, the radio stations were useless as an information source. When the end o’ civilization comes, I know the Clear Channel robostations will play on without ears left to listen. (with the exception of the three Southern Maryland stations that simulcasted on generators. So what if the DJ’s were drunk.)
Well, I finally got power back today. Still have trees down everywhere, making it annoying to get around. Overall can’t complain since we didn’t have any major damage in our area.
