Come on, Irene!

Ocean City, Maryland is being evacuated, which should be complete by five this afternoon. NYC is considering evacuating low-lying areas of the city. (Isn’t the whole thing low-lying?)

Yorick posted on Google+ this video of Irene from the ISS.

It is getting pretty scary here on Long Island. We have not had a real hurricane since 1991. Really hoping I’m not spending the next week scooping water out of the basement…

I hope you don’t have to scoop water out of your basement either.

Stay safe everyone!

If you can still get a battery back-up sump pump at a hardware store I’d highly recommend it. I have one installed as a back-up in case my main breaks or I lose power. Well worth the $400-$600 investment to protect the $25,000 of finished basement and household goods down there. Sure, I have basement flood insurance but if I can prevent it for $500 or less? Then I’ll never have to deal with the hassle of replacing everything. Including my utilities like HVAC and Water heater.

I think this is similar to the one I installed several years ago: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100065446/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

But this is a cheaper unit: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-100067307/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Good luck! Let us know how it’s going if you can.

We sold dump trucks full of sump pumps this year. The heat came late this season so when it did the surface runoff caused flooding. “Being Prepared” isn’t only good for Boy Scouts. I hope everyone is safe.

Weather Underground has loads of maps.

And google has a nifty interactive map.

They’re evacuating coastal areas of NYC. BoingBoing has a links collection.

Kinda creepy to have this the same week as the whole Earthquake thing…hoping this is the normal hot air we get about the hurricanes…but I don’t feel so sure about this one idly passing by…

Y’all stay safe folks…thots are with ya

Can’t resist. The thread title is just too similar. Be safe there at the east coast and dance to this classic!

It’s a pune, or play on words.

Although, considering the earlier events of the week, this might be more appropriate:

Well, as the storm gets continually downgraded, I’m sticking with my primary preparedness plan ™:

  • MacBook and iPhone fully charged (with AC adapter in car)
  • Eight episodes of Dr. Who; six of Dexter; a dozen True Blood; and the full season of Earth 2
  • Bottle of Rioja (Maybe two. Still deciding.)
  • A pan of cooked bacon, popcorn, and a bar of dark chocolate
  • One zombie apocalypse book
  • A candle
  • The cat

Always remember to double tap.

This is very similar to my preparedness plan:

  • MacBook, iPhone, and iPad fully charged (Wish I had the car adapter)
  • A dozen movies (including Titan AE which I just picked up on sale) and Eff-This-Week episode 1
  • Bottle of Wine (Maybe two. Still deciding.)
  • A pan of grilled cheese, crackers, and a bar of dark chocolate
  • One Star Wars book
  • A flashlight
  • A pillow

In all seriousness, I have been reading all week that candles are a bad idea because they are fire hazard and there could be gas leaks, so you should stick with flashlights.

First ring of intense rain showing on Wakefield, VA doppler. Not as many red spots as I expected. Irene is massively spread out but looking weaker than what first appeared on the SC dopplers. Definitely not the wall of oh holy shit! that Isabel was. Of course, Isabel was “just” a tropical storm when it wrecked the metro-DC area. Crossing my fingers for here and all points north Irene keeps speeding up, turning clockwise NNE, and weakening. Good luck!

Sadly the closest I have to a flashlight are my two FX Ligthsabers…but they worked for the last blackout

I had plans with my husband and 2 best friends to go into NYC for the weekend for my birthday. We had reservations at the formal dining room of Chef Gordon Ramsay’s place. The restarant called to cancel the reservations due to the fact that they were evacuating that part of the city.

Irene really put a damper on my plans-b*tch. Oh well, going to make the best of it. After all, it is MY birthday…I will celebrate by watching ‘MisFits’ on HULU and drinking copious amounts of coffee with which to drive hubby and Keir out of their collective minds. Thank you.
