My old 25 inch CRT is on its way out and I’d like to join the HD/1080p/flatscreen/fancypants world. Where can I find good independent reviews and explanations of all the numbers that get tossed about. I’m only looking for 30-40 inch and flat, I’d like to hope this will be simple.
I’d recommend the Samsung 8000 series LEDs. Done a ton of research on them and I’d own the 46 inch if circumstances didn’t keep getting in the way
Well first you have to decide, plasma or lcd. Lcd can be thinner but then its led or fluorescent light. Plasma is faster but a bit bulkier and draws slightly more power.
Best place to start the search is the avs forums.
Good luck
P.S. If you don’t need it yesterday. Do the research and see what deals will be on the tv’s for Black Friday.

Plasma TVs use something closer to 3x the power of an LCD w/ LED backlight and are subject to screen burnin. There’s no compelling price difference between the two, I would recommend LCD.
On specifics, I purchased a 37" Vizeo LCD 1080p set to use a computer monitor last year. I was super nervous about dropping four and a half centaclams on a TV as a monitor but have been completely satisfied with it. I was happy enough that I recently chose a 26" 1080p LED backlit Vizeo LCD for our new bedroom television. I have also been quite pleased with it.
I asked the same question about this time last year. You might find some useful information here too:

The HD Nation podcast does reviews on TV’s all the time. And also do a lot of conversing about how to calibrate them, hang them, maintain them and about which sets are best for different rooms. Because of lighting and sound and so forth. And whether 3D is ready or not… Good podcast. Oh, and they discuss projectors as well…
And set top boxes, blu ray players, TV software, movies, remotes, homemade media centers etc.
